I'm trying to find a way to identify the model of switch when connected by Telnet or web (SwitchExplorer). The web interface, or the showswitch command, give a numeric "switch type" value (e.g. 34), but I can't find any reference that lists what model corresponds to what "switch type" number.

Can you use SNMP instead? That will give you the text version of the switch model. This is documented in Brocade's SNMP manual.

I've got a few HP-branded switches and they do display the Brocade model via SNMP:SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.47.1.1.1.1.2.1 = STRING: "SilkWorm4100"
