SEP unmanaged client 14.2 RU1 MP1 will not upgrade to 14.2 RU2 (5323)

Hello,

I have always been able to upgrade 14.x unmanaged SEP clients to new versions using the client-only patches (Windows) downloaded from Symantec. Not so with 14.2 RU1 MP1 (build 4814).  The upgrade to build 5323 always fails silently.  Running SymDiag gives no helpful info.  Even if I enable built-in Administrator account and enable Remote Registry service, client will not upgrade.  I'm running Windows 10 Home x64 version 1909.  Is this expected behavior?

Hi Tro,

is your machine fully patched with windows update? Have you tried installing the full version instead of client only patches? Please post the sep_inst.log

Where can I find the install log?  Based on this doc (https://support.symantec.com/us/en/article.tech164067.html), there appear to be no logs for the failed install of build 5323.  There are full logs up to and including 4814.  The 5323 (4814to5323) install fails very quickly, and may not have produced a log. 

Our admin cannot (or won't) distribute the full installer, as upgrading with the client-only patches has always worked (until now). 

My system is fully patched to Win 10 version 1909 and beyond.  I just did a Fresh Start install of Win 10.

Hi Tro,

Have you also tried a package with progress bar or interaction turned on? As silent package will not give any popups or errors as to what the issue may be. An sometimes the popup will give a simple reason :)

GeoGeo, excellent idea, how do I turn that on?  The downloaded client-only patches always run silently in background with no progress bar or interation.

In SEPM select admin > Client install settings > copy existing installer and make a copy > edit the copy and in select installation type select progress bar or interactive and click ok 

Then export an new package and in the installation settings for pacage select the new policy you created 

When you run the install over your existing installation it will show a progress bar and any error message 

Don't think there is a client only installer directly from symanterc with the progress bar but if you can access a SEPM any package with that setting will upgrade your unmanaged client with the bar

I’m also the same problem. My server 2016 can not upgrade silent from 4814 to 5323. I try to uninstall version 4814 and install version client 5323 successfull. Regards

Thank you @GeoGeo, I'll ask my admin about that.  I don't have SEPM installed.

@Phuong Nguyen Van, that was the solution, and a simple one at that.  Thank you!  Perhaps someone at Symantec should look at the 4814to5323 patch and upgrade path.

while symatec waits for another patch to fix silent update errors. I think my solution is the best.
