I have SEP 12.1 installed as an unmanaged client and have found it unable to take live updates. Do I need a paid license in order to receive live updates? What other restrictions does it have on a trial license?

SEP 12.1 unmanaged client requires the licenses. To enable the submission of reputation data from an unmanaged client, you must install a paid license on the client

Thanks for the replies. I've decided to buy a license. But I just saw there was a new SEP called Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 2013. And its license is cheaper than that of SEP 12.1. What are the differences between them?Currently I'm using SEP 12.1 on my dedicated server running Windows Server 2003, which is collocated in an IDC in my city. It's basically being run as a web and game server. Which version do you recommend?

    Check the comparison here

SBE may fit best for you in your case for unmanaged

SEP SBE 2013 is cloud based.

How many clients are in your network?

Small business 2013 is can work either as cloud-managed service or as an on-premise management application - please note that from the features and options limitations it will be similar to SEP SBE 12.1 - it is designed for smaller environment, depending how many clients are you planning to deploy.

only 1. The box is on the Internet.

Since it is exposed to the Internet, make sure you also have a firewall on it and I would add the IPS. SBE offers both of these components so if that is cheaper, you can go for that.

Thanks for the explanation. I've heard that an unmanaged client can still receive live updates after the license expires. Is it true?

When the license goes out of compliance the Symantec Endpoint Protection product goes into enforcement mode. There are two types of enforcement

    1)  Hard Enforcement: SEP 12.1 Small Business Edition

    • Content update downloads stop for both server and clients. In Small Business Edition it's 1:1 mapping with CAT server.
    • UI changes and log notifications are started.

    2)  Soft Enforcement: SEP 12.1 Enterprise Edition

    •  Content update downloads continue from all the sources.
    •  UI changes and log notifications are started.

...if you are on the EE Edition it will still receive the updates.
