  • 1.  Error "Integration protocol error: bmiEndMessage failed. Error is: SMG: fatal server error: other"

    Hello,

    yesterday around 5 pm our Symantec SMG stopped relaying all emails. The message log was full with the following two errors - both errors for each email:
    Date: Wednesday, Jun 10, 2020 04:04:28 AM CEST
    Severity: Error
    Host: Local Host
    Log type: MTA
    Description: Integration protocol error: bmiEndMessage failed. Error is: SMG: fatal server error: other

     

    Date: Wednesday, Jun 10, 2020 04:04:28 AM CEST
    Severity: Error
    Host: Local Host
    Log type: MTA
    Description: Deferring message: failed to filter message

     



    Since this started shortly after the end of our business hours, the problem wasn't noticed until the next morning.

    A reboot fixed the problem and all mails since yesterday 5pm have been now relayed to the mail servers, however it would be great to know what caused this issue. Any ideas? No changes had been made to the SMG, the network etc. around that time.

    I got the same error last night too.  A reboot and the queue's emptied.  Hoping someone chimes in with something helpful.

    I got the same error q few minutes ago. After a reboot the gateway works fine.

    Hi,
    I had also opened a ticket with Broadcom regarding this issue, and today I got the following answer:

    ---------------------------

    Dear Customer,
    Thank you for contacting Broadcom Technical Support.

    It seems this error is known issue.
    We will release fixed version of SMG in near future, but any kind of information such as release date and version are not determined yet.

    Following steps will work as workaround.
    - Restart following services on command line console.
     - conduit
     - Brightmail Engine
     - MTA

    Example:
    service conduit restart

    If the workaround is not working as expected, please reboot your SMG.

    This is a known issue and we are working on finding a resolution.

    This document references the current status and workaround for this issue. You can follow this document which will be updated when we have a solution.

    This happened to us yesterday evening until this morning. We had some of the emails fail delivery and not stay in the queue.

    Is there a way to get a list of all emails that failed delivery?

    What we have seen when this issue occurs in other customer's environments is messages are queued in the inbound and outbound queues until the service is restarted and then the messages are delivered properly.

    If this is not what happened in your situation, I would recommend opening a support ticket so we can look into this further.
