  • 1.  Debugging options for Encryption Management Server Logs

    Hi,

I have a ticket open with Symantec Technical Support.  My issue is that my primary SEMS server constantly reports the secondary cluster server as "unreachable" before flipping back to "normal."  Basically, it's flipping back and forth all the time.

The "Cluster" log clearly shows that the link is being established, followed by an EOF and the link being dropped.  This repeats itself every few seconds.

The tech I'm working with at Symantec isn't frankly, the greatest.  He asked me to turn on debugging, and sent me a KB article (https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH177118.html) on how to do that by editing the debug.xml log.  The KB says to turn on the debugging options I need, and I kept asking him which ones those are, but he just told me to turn them all on, and leave it for a day (which I have no intention of doing for fear my server will crash sometime in the middle of the night.)

I'm looking at the console, and I see debug logs being created in the "Client," "Groups," and "Mail" logs.  However, I DON'T see any debugs being created in the "Cluster" log.

Does anyone know if turning on debugging in this way will actually help with the cluster service?  Or is this tech just wasting my time?

    Thank you,

    - Steve

If the current logs give no indication as to the cause of your issues, then increasing the log level is certainly a legitimate next step.  Similarly, it makes sense to increase logging for all aspects of the SEMS if the Cluster logs aren't giving you more info, as it is all related (i.e. the SEMS is replicating data and changes generated by the other components.)

If you are concerned about disk space however, and if the issue is replicable, perhaps you can increase logging just for long enough to demonstrate the issue?

Thanks.  I agree that debug logs are often useful.  I was more asking if anyone knew if this *specific* problem could be solved by turning on the debugs in debug.xml.

As for replicating the issue, it happens by itself every few seconds.

At any rate, I sent the technician the logs he asked for, which didn't contain any debug logs...
