  • 1.  Windows System Assessment Scan fails with Exit Code: 4

    Posted Jan 11, 2022 10:29 AM

Hi Experts, I have some old Windows targets, that recently the "System Assessment Scan" is failing.
I understand that is has to do with the certificates. so I tried pushing my certs according , but no luck.
even tried following the steps below in this KB, and still no luck.

    Machines are in WorkGroup.

    Any Suggestions?

    tnx,
    Hagai

Windows System Assessment Scan fails with Exit Code: 4
Resolution Review one of the following methods of resolution: Download the following two certificates and place them in the WindowsVunlnerabilityScan folder on the Notification Server. The default path is C:\Program Files\Altiris\Patch Management\Packages\WindowsVulnerabilityScan Advisory : Certificates will be downloaded automatically to the endpoints and installed during the vulnerability assessment scan on schedule following the replication of the scan package to the Package / Site Servers for deployment to end-points.

    Hi Hagai,

what OS do you have on the problematic computers?
Old Windows OS versions (like Windows Server 2003, for example) may need an additional KB968730 installed to utilize given certificates (check this thread for details).

Hi Dmitri, took a look at the KB page you sent, unfortunately I couldn't test, the link is broken and missing the suggested KB.

Also, from a quick search in google this is relevant to XP, but I couldn't locate any equal KB for win7.

    Tnx,

    Hagai

Seems to be related to: "Wireless ADDS ADCS NPS Windows2003 /2008/2012/7/8/XP"

does anyone knows if ITMS has found a solution for this?

    tnx,

HI Hagai - on an enpoint that is failing with exit code 4, verify that the certs are in the scan tools folder. The default location is:
    C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\SoftwareManagement\Software Delivery\{6D417916-467C-46A7-A870-6D86D9345B61}\cache
If not, try copying into that folder and re-running the assessment scan.

    Hi Chris.

    Thanks for your reply.

Found the target, added the certs, ran the scan again, and same result (failed)

I notice that it's only for targets below Win10... could it be due to some Microsoft change in the legacy OSs somehow?

Are you currently with Win7 or Win2003/8/r2 and able to connect without any issues?

Machines are connected to NS and TS using HTTPs , all seems to be OK, tasks are running, but Scan assessment keeps failing ... weird...

    Tnx,

    Hagai

Do you see anything useful in the scan log?
    "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\SoftwareManagement\Software Delivery\{6D417916-467C-46A7-A870-6D86D9345B61}\cache\STPatchAssessment.log"

You might also try setting the logging on the client to verbose/trace/debug and running the scan to see if there is anything that would help.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Event Logging\LogFile, set Severity to FF (hex) - 7 is the default to return it to.

Not seeing anything useful except it's failing on certificates, which is weird since it's connected using those certificates to be connected to both NS and TS on HTTPS ports successfully.

Not seeing it on any Win10+ targets, only below...

    tnx,
    Hagai
