  • 1.  Does Symantec Patch Management require the wuauserv service to be running?

    We have noticed that if we disable the wuauserv service (Windows Update Agent) that systems will not patch using Symantec Patch Management. Is this a required service?

    We are using ITMS 7.1 SP2 MP1.1.

    Yes, the Windows Update Agent is necessary because Patch Managment runs the actual patch binaries from Microsoft, and those require Windows Update Agent. Altiris is not recreating the binaries themselves, just packaging the command line runs.

    this doesnt make sense to me... we have 3423 machines in the console right now as we are migrating from NS6 to 7.1 SP2 MP1 with Rollup 1... (what a name surprise)

    anyway... we have 2388 machines with the service disabled and they are getting patches. What I noticed is I setup a report for Daily Software Delivery Failures. and I just got about 10 machines from patches giving a 1058.. during my investigation.. i turned this service on and patches went.. I didnt think anything about it... then I just threw some SQL code together and got 2388 with that service disabled.... ugggghhh I just scheduled a meeting with my team...

    side question.. did NS6 use this service or did this change when Symantec purchased Altiris and made NS7? just curious where the change happened...

    My understanding is that given service is used not directly by Patch Management but by updates themselves.
    If this service is disabled, programs will not be able to use the Windows Update Agent (WUA) API. During installation of .msu files wusa.exe calls the appropriate functions in the WUA API (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934307 ), so this service is required for successful patching via .MSU files.

    ^^ Gotcha.. thanks.. yeah we see that on win7 it is the case.. phew.. we are 90% XP so were good there and our win7 image has this service on...
