    When we install Symantec Management Agent on a new Windows 10 client machine, i see an error early on in the Agent log (in bold).

    <event date='01/23/2020 10:20:46.9040000 -05:00' severity='4' hostName='jima' source='Installer' module='AeXNSAgentInst.exe' process='AeXNSAgentInst.exe' pid='13576' thread='20108' tickCount='58660312' >

    </event>

    Does anyone know what this event is telling me?  Where is the Core Agent Install trying to get an install path from?  Is there a setting on the server that isnt set correctly?  where would i look for clues as to why we are seeing this error?   And what is the Install Path used for?  And if it doesnt have one, is it using a default one instead?  It appears to continue the agent install without this variable.

    Thank You

    Hi James Auman!

    No worries for this message during Symantec Management Agent installation. This occurs during first SMA installation and it tries to parse registry to find current installdir path of SMA in case if it is already installed with lower version and if it going to perform upgrade of itself, using same path.

    For Symantec Management Agent installation path, you can set required install directory from "Agent Install" page. Click on "Default Settings" button above, specify install path and click OK, then NS will re-generate "Symantec Management Agent" installation package which is located in \\Your SMP Server Address\NSCap\bin\Win32\X86\AeXNSCHTTP.exe or AeXNSCHTTPs.exe. So you can manually take this installation package and install it or install SMA from "Agent Install" page by push, new changed install path will be used.

    This error will doesn't appear anymore when Symantec Management Agent is already installed and you will just perform upgrade of SMA to next released versions.

    Thanks,

    IP.

    Thank you Igor.  I dont mind ignoring the error if it can be ignored.  Would you recommend us setting the 'override the default install path' value anyway as a 'best practice'?  or just leave it blank as it currently is by defaults.

    Thanks
    Jim

    I would say that even if you will override default path for Agent installation settings, same error will appears during Agent initial/first clean installation on client computer. Despite on this error during first clean Agent install, or you agent functions and isn't crashed/stopped, so continute to use it in your environment.

    This problem is addressed in the next agent update. The message is harmless and simply indicates that there were no agent installed previously on that machine.
