  • 1.  Creating filters and targets with SQL

    Posted Oct 09, 2020 03:42 AM
    Hello,

This question comes to our mind (our organization) whenever we have to distribute a new software or implementation: Would be possible to create filters and targets by SQL?
Why we need this? let me put an example: Update to version 1909

Our region is made by 53 countries, so we ask to the countries that, in order that they upgrade the computers to 1909 add their machines in one common filter. All machines in such filter will be upgraded to 1909. The problem is, due to the way as Altiris works, one country )country = OU) cannot add computers from other country, but one country can remove from the filter computers from other country! We already opened a case with this problem and there is no solution for this.

So, from time to time one country remove the computer from others, and we receive hundred of complaints. The solution would be to create 53 different filters and add those filters to the corresponding target, but this task is tedious!!

We could give the rights to the countries for create their filters, but the task to add those filters to the atrget is also hard for our team... The same issue whenever we want to update or upgrade or install any common software in our company: SAP client, Zoom, Websense, Cisco---

Is for that because we were wondering if there is any quick way to create the filters using SQL, and with a second SQL add those filters to one target.   If not, what idea would you propose us??? any help will be very welcome!!!!

    Altiris 8.5 RU2
One NS, and 110 Task/package Servers distributed
    20.000 clients

That is a very big question with more than one possible answer.  All of them seem too big to accurately provide assistance here.

If I understood your question you are looking for an SQL script that would create the filters.  Unfortunately, that is not possible, SQL can be used as the definition of a filter but not to create the filters.

You could use the ASDK to create filters
    https://techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/symantec-security-software/endpoint-security-and-management/it-management-suite/8-5/Getting_Started_2/Understanding_the_components_of_IT_Management_Suite_1/About-ASDK-in-IT-Management-Suite.html
but you still need to have some means of separating the groups IE Naming convention, OU, IP etc.

If you are trying to keep different groups of users from controlling other groups of computers using the Role and Scope based security would be the best option.
Here are a couple of KBS that give the steps.  They are giving it from a different perspective of splitting servers and workstations but it is the same principle.

From what I could tell from your post you are going to have to go through the work at least once of splitting up your computers into 53 different Organizational Groups or Filters.

Thanks a lot for your answer Doug,

While I investigate what you are telling me, what about any SQL or procedure to add many different filters to one single target, not having to go filter by filter?

    Thanks again.

    Saludos, Best Regards

I would not suggest trying to use SQL however you could more easily create a filter that has an include of all the filters you want then use that in the target.  The filter include feature allows you to do multiple at once.

Very good idea!!! We use the filters this way frequently, as you are suggesting, but we did not think about using it this way with the targets for this particular problem. Totally right!

    Thanks a lot!
