Hello,
I saw this in the fixes for 14.3 -
https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/189620.
But to be honest I am not sure what Symantec means by saying "
smc -stop fails unless the password is specified on the command-line. Relying on the UI to enter a password does not work"
I tested also to stop SEP 14.2.5569 with smc -stop via the command line by navigating to C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection and running it from there but the same result, SEP doesn't stop. Only works if you remove the password.
The solution is to upgrade to 14.3
Regards,
Stefan

Thanks Stefan!
So there is no workaround besides upgrading? i mean you wrote "unless the password is specified on the command-line".
does that mean i can alter the smc -stop command to include the password?

This is fixed in 14.3:
Services fail to stop when using smc -stop
Fix ID: ESCRT-3251
Symptoms: smc -stop fails unless the password is specified on the command-line. Relying on the UI to enter a password does not work.
Solution: Fixed code that verifies the calling process
In 14.2.5569 if you have password for stopping the service, it doesn't stop when you run "smc -stop". If you remove the password from the SEPM console, then service will stop

In release 14.2.5569.2100 the smc -stop is not working.
you see a command line window like in previous versions but when that windows closes, endpoint protection is still active and does not shut down. no matter how often you try.
is this a bug or did something change in this release? is there another way to stop endpoint protection besides uninstalling every time which is very annoying?
