Tuesday Tip:  Introducing CA Common Services for z/OS Service Update S1401

Dec 14, 2015 09:02 AM

On April 1, 2014, CA Technologies announced the availability of CA Common Services for z/OS Release 14.1 Service Update, (S1401).
This Service Update encompasses all published r14.1 maintenance incorporated into the CA RS 1401 level or, in other words, all maintenance up to and including RO62971.

In addition to providing this comprehensive maintenance, S1401 also introduces several new enhancements which include:

* CAMASTER now lets you control the automatic startup of
   CAMASTER infrastructure address spaces.
* New Common Address Space Shell Service added to CAMASTER FMID.
* CAIRIM enhancements made to support SYSPLEX parameter sharing.
* ENF toleration of accidental Datacom MUF shutdown.
* New Common Component Trace Service added to CAMASTER FMID.
* New Common Recovery Management Service added to CAMASTER FMID.
* CAUNZIP utility is included.

* New CA Common Variable Service added and made available as a
   separate pax file.
* New CA Hardware Interface Service added and made available in
   a separate pax file.
* New CA Linux Connector Service added and made available in a
   separate pax file.

For further details on this Service Update, please refer to the CA Common Services Cover Letter 14.1 S1401 RI67924.  Additional information is also found in the CA Common Services for z/OS r14.1 Release Notes - Fourth Edition.

I wanted to provide additional clarification and information regarding the availability of this service update.

As noted in a previous post regarding the availability of the S1401 service update package..."If you are already at the CCS r14.1 level with current Maintanence then you do not need to do anything.  This Service Update is useful for sites that are considerably behind in their maintenance application or if they have not upgraded to r14.1 yet."

For existing CCS r14.1 sites that are considerably behind in maintenance, a re-install with the S1401 CCS r14.1 Service Update level may be considered a desired approach. If this is the case, you need to be aware of some considerations. Please review RI69562.

Service update S1401 is CCS r14.1 with all published PTFs up to and including CA RS 1401. This essentially incorporates all PTFs published up through Sept 30, 2013 plus any HYPERS through Dec 31st ”.

Refer to CA RS for z/OS Release Grid which is located on the CA Recommended Service for z/OS page.

Recently I have seen a couple of concerns being reported by our customers, so I thought it important to post this reply.

In the past, some of you were able to pick and choose which component(s) you wanted to install from the BASE paxfile. Over the course of the delivery of incremental enhancements we have come to know that this can cause problems. For example, we know that the successful execution of CAS9 (CAIRIM) now requires that CAMASTER be installed and be active prior to the execution of CAS9. With the availability of the S1401 service update for CCS r14.1 there have been changes that prohibit this practice even further. It has now been seen that an attempt to install CAIRIM without also installing CAIENF will result in link-edit errors during SMP/E APPLY processing.

In light of this, two new Knowledge Documents have been published to bring attention to what has been reported:
