CADRE/CA Datacom™ Technical Conference 3.0 - Preliminary Agenda

As announced previously, registration is now open for the CADRE/CA Datacom Technical Conference 3.0 being held April 16 - 20, 2018 in the CA Plano, TX office.  Below please find a preliminary list of sessions which will be presented at the conference.  We will update as we confirm additional sessions / speakers.  The preliminary agenda can be downloaded as an attachment below.

Pre-conference Education Offerings: Combined Track (Everyone)

Workshop: How to Prevent RC 07/08                                                April 17th 3:15 – 4:30 PM

In this session we will cover how to prevent return codes 07 and 08, including new features Dynamic Extend Flex and Dynamic Extend Retry.  The presentation will be followed by a live demonstration/workshop.

  

 

Pre-conference Education Offerings: “New-to-Datacom” DBA Track

Basic MUF Operations                                                                         April 17th 1:00 – 3:00 PM

In this presentation we will discuss operational considerations for a MUF instance.  For example:  Starting the MUF, EOJ the MUF, Quiesce a database and open it again, how to spill in a MUF, and console API usage (MVS and DBUTLTY APIs).

  

 

Pre-conference Education Offerings: Experienced DBA Track

Workshop: New Tools for the DBA Tool Belt                                     April 16th 1:15 – 5:30 PM

In this workshop we will begin with an overview of TM24, BA24, OAM, TA24, and Key Add, Delete, and Swap.  In addition, we will discuss the use of 1000 Alter in support of continuous operations.  Then we will break up into teams for some hands-on experience using the tools.

 

Additional Topics for the Experienced DBA                                       April 17th 8:30 AM – noon

In this presentation we will discuss how to implement Change Data Capture (CDC), from activation to management of the resources. We will begin with a technical overview of Change Data Capture (CDC), followed by a customer presentation discussing how CDC is used, from a user’s perspective.  Then we will cover the MQ Transport Facility (MQTS), followed by a customer presentation using MQTS from a user’s perspective.

 

Advanced Topics for the Experienced DBA                                        April 17th 1:00 – 3:00 PM

This information session is provided to brief the experienced DBAs on new features and functionality that we are currently developing (but have not yet committed to deliver) and get feedback.

Keynote Session – CA Mainframe Strategy                                         April 18th 8:30 – 10:00 AM

CA Mainframe strategy will be presented by CA mainframe executive leadership.

 

Community Ideation & CA Datacom Validation Program                   April 18th 10:15 – 11:15 AM

In this session we will discuss the Ideation program of the CA Datacom CADRE Community and how you can be involved with CA Datacom Development as a validation partner.  We’ll make sure you know how to enter and vote up (or down) an Idea entered by a fellow Community member.  We’ll review CA’s progress in delivering features that have been requested.  And we’ll show you how you can partner with us to validate yours (and others) as work progresses.

 

Syncsort and CA Technologies Partner to Enable Next-Generation Analytics for CA Datacom and CA IDMS                                                                             April 18th 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM

Come to this session to learn more about Syncsort’s DMX-h Big Data Integration software to access data from CA Datacom and CA IDMS for advanced analytics.

This session will provide details around the DMX-h implementation for providing organizations with a simplified environment for accessing and integrating enterprise data sources like CA Datacom and CA IDMS.

In this session the Product Manager will present our product direction and strategy.  Attending a Product Roadmap session is an opportunity for you to get a clear view of what’s coming down the road, including details on upcoming product functionality, features, and architectural enhancements.

In this session we will discuss the most current features provided in 15.1.

Security Forum                                                                                      April 18th 4:45 – 5:30 PM

In this open forum we will discuss topics, issues and experiences regarding the implementation of external security in a Datacom environment.

 

CADRE General Session                                                                       April 19th 4:30 – 5:30 PM

In this session we will discuss topics of general interest to the CADRE community.  We will also introduce a new CA Datacom mentoring program to assist “new-to-Datacom” customers who could greatly benefit from the insight and experiences of those who have been using Datacom for many years.

 

DCD Demonstration                                                                               April 20th 8:30 – 9:30 AM

In this demonstration we will introduce Data Content Discovery.

 

Mobile Access for CA Datacom                                                            April 20th 9:30 – 10:30 AM

In this session we will explore a prototype application viable toward the health of any chosen Datacom MUF environment, utilizing specific information from the Datacom dynamic system tables.

 

Future Features of CA Datacom                                                           April 20th 10:30 – 11:30 AM

In this presentation we will discuss the Datacom/DB future features:

How a client can add a new column(s) to an existing open table without closing.

Better optimization options for space usage (DSOP6 and DSOP7 are two strategies).

 

CADRE Closing                                                                                      April 20th 11:30 AM – 12:00 noon

The CADRE Board of Directors will discuss their plans for the future, answer any questions, and present awards.

SQL Procedures                                                                                     April 19th 8:30 – 9:30 AM

In this session we will discuss usage of SQL procedures.  We will cover both External and Lite (SQL) procedures, along with Triggers and UDFTs (User Defined Function Tables). It will include JCL and code samples to illustrate the process.

 

Java Applications with Datacom Server                                              April 19th 9:30 – 10:30 AM

This session provides an overview of the steps and best practices used to code and execute JDBC applications to access CA Datacom tables with CA Datacom Server.

 

SQL New Features                                                                                  April 19th 10:45 – 11:45 AM

In this session we will discuss SQL new features, including Scalar Functions MODULO and POSITION and Nested Table Expressions. 

 

Application Tuning                                                                                 April 19th 1:00 – 3:00 PM

In this session we will discuss various aspects of application tuning from a customer's perspective to help your applications perform at their best level.

 

CA Ideal Upgrade Topics                                                                       April 19th 3:30 – 4:30 PM

This session will cover considerations for planning to upgrade CA Ideal and/or other CA Datacom components in the CA Ideal environment.  In addition, CICS Transaction Server upgrade issues will be discussed.

 

 

Conference Sessions: DBA Track

Security in the Datacom World                                                             April 19th 8:30 – 9:30 AM

Regulatory requirements, potential security breaches, vulnerabilities; what’s a DBA to do? In this session we will discuss strategies and tools for protecting your data and systems across the entire Datacom environment for both DB and AD sites.

 

SQL Monitor                                                                                            April 19th 9:30 – 10:30 AM

This session will describe the installation and usage of SQL Monitor. This application can be used to identify inefficient queries and to do Diagnostics and analysis to determine the source of the inefficiency and assessing corrective actions to improve performance. SQL Source Cache is useful in providing information for the SQL Monitor to process.

 

Operational Considerations: Online Reorg & Simplify                      April 19th 10:45 – 11:45 AM

In this presentation we will discuss legacy and modern tools to reorganize a database, including DEFRAG of indexes. In addition, we will discuss using Simplify, especially the pros and cons for converting to Simplify and how to get there.

 

Demonstration of Active Upgrade                                                       April 19th 1:00 – 2:00 PM

In this demonstration we will perform a live upgrade of a 14.0 MUF instance to 15.0, following the CA recommended upgrade path.

 

Top 5 Reasons to be on CA Datacom 15.1                                          April 19th 2:00 – 3:00 PM

In this session we will hear a customer's perspective on the value of 15.1 features.

 

Compression with CA Datacom                                                           April 19th 3:30 – 4:00 PM

Different clients seek different strategies and methods to compress their data.  CA Datacom Presspack offers such a method in a Datacom environment.  In this session different levels of compression will be demonstrated.

 

z/OSMF                                                                                                   April 19th 4:00 – 4:30 PM

In this session we will discuss the IBM interface for APARs and fixes, zOSMF, including a demo of zOSMF for configuration and installation of a CA Datacom Version 15.1 environment in a few steps. zOSMF will be the replacement for the current CA Chorus Software Manager.
