Tuesday Tip: Why is CA Mainframe Application Tuner ending with an 878-10 abend?

Oct 07, 2014 02:09 PM

CA Mainframe Application Tuner (MAT) is ending with an 878-10 abend with no errors when restarted automatically.  What are the symptoms of this error, and what can be done to resolve them?

You are seeing CA Mainframe Application Tuner (MAT) end with messages similar to the following:

Note that the error is during a GETMAIN. This indicates that CA MAT is having some kind of storage management issue. You will find that Monitors created during the time of the abend are either EMPTY or INCOMPLETE.

The Monitor that resulted in the abend messages above was of a DB2 task, and it was found that with the Harvester turned on the number of storage blocks resulted in a SOS (Short on Storage) condition.

There are several PTFs that have been written to address this and other 878 abends. Please download and apply RO66574, RO67424, RO72577, and RO74148. Recycle the CA MAT server, and retry the measurement.

If you find the 878 abends are still occurring after applying these PTFs, please open an issue using CA Support Online. We will require the S878 abend captured as a SVC DUMP, the CA MAT server LOG, and your maintenance level (last PTF applied).
