Hello, I am a newer admin for my companies UNIX System Services and we have 8 ROOT IDs set up for a few OMVS groups within ACF2. Just curious as to what these are? Or what the use for them is?

I was thinking they may have been created to set as our OMVS Default User or Group? However, I am not 100% sure. Wondering if anyone else has these types of IDs set up?

We currently have a default OMVS ID, but we don't have it set up as the default ID in our UNIXOPTS.

Any info on this would be great!

Thanks!

Hi Luke,

OMVS requires that users performing certain functions have a UID(0) or superuser status. Once a user is given superuser status, they have complete access to the system. The UNIXPRIV class allows specific control of the individual functions performed by a user with superuser authority. This is referred to as superuser granularity. The following table lists the new resources and what access or function is controlled by that resource.

BPX.DEFAULT.USER is not supported by the operating system at z/OS 2.1 or higher. All users accessing Unix System Services (OMVS) must have a UID and a default group that has been assigned a GID. It is recommended that each user has a unique UID and each group has a unique GID.
