  • 1.  can dataset triggering be 'quiesced' (would we even want to?)

Hello Forum,   just one of those questions that one thinks about once a decade:

We are upgrading our mainframe cpus next month and all our lpars will be down 4-6 hours, (and so including our ESP v11.4 mainframe edition)
Our operations is mulling over different scenarios to control applications before and after the long outage that includes issuance of hold commands and/or oper quiesce.
When one issues in page mode the command:  oper QUIESCE
    one sees something like this:
    oper status
    ESP1977I ESP release 11.4 status
    ESP1978I EVENT SCHEDULING QUIESCED
    ESP1979I DATA SET TRIGGERING ACTIVE

Quesiton:  Scheduling is clearly quiesced,  but DATA SET TRIGGERING remains active.
Is there a pagemode command that would also quiesce data set triggering?
And is there any reason why we'd even care if it remained active?

    thanks

You can suspend Data set triggers by issuing DSTRST QUIESCE in page mode.  You can find more info here:

We went through a similar situation last year when the re-ip'd our mainframe.  I have to give credit to Rick Baber in support for helping us with this!

Generally dataset trigger needn't be quiesced. The reason is, even the dataset trigger activity still functions, the quiesced event scheduling won't allow succeeding processes, for example:
    - If the dataset trigger is in event definition, ESP will acknowledge the dataset activity, but can't trigger the event;
    - If the dataset trigger is in ESP proc, ESP will acknowledge the dataset activity, but can't complete the DSTRIG wob which also needs the event scheduling function.

    Hope this helps,

Hi Lucy!!  That too makes sense and explains why after all these years we've never actually quiesced dataset triggering.

    Thanks & best regards
