We moved from BMC tools for DB2 to CA tools for DB2 in 2013.

They have a interface to support Virtual Indexes. They call is "What If" analysis and "Clone". This feature is very useful, when you think an index might help improve performance of a query but not sure if it'll really help. Or you might think dropping an index will help. This feature helps figure these out.

I've tried using Virtual Index, in DB2 way. But it's cumbersome, time consuming, not user friendly.

Is there any other alternative in CA tools? Is there any plan to bring this feature in the next releases?

    Kumaresh,

Great question and very timely.  The Plan Analyzer team is in the middle of working on a process to allow easy use of DB2 Virtual Indexes as defined in DSN_VIRTUAL_INDEXES.  The new process integrates with the EXPLAIN and reporting processes in the Plan Analyzer tool.  We have past demos of this new capability in our VALIDATE.CA.COM site.  We will have more to show on this new capability in the future Sprint reviews.  You will need our r19 Incremental release to use this new feature.

Let us know if you need more info.

    Thanks,

Jeff - will this be retrofitted into R18? We just migrated from R16 to R18. Most probably we'll not be migrating to R19 anytime soon

    Kumaresh,

At this time, there are no plans to retrofit the Virtual Index functionality to r18.  Sorry for the bad news.  However, you can run r18 and r19 side by side which can give you the best of both environments.

    All,

The SQL Analysis team is proud to announce that the Virtual Index enhancement is complete and published.  The PTF RO85504 can be downloaded and installed in the r19 environment.   To learn more about this and other changes to the Plan Analyzer product, check out the wiki doc at https://wiki.ca.com/display/CAPADB219/Enhancements

For detail information on Virtual Indexes, you can look at this doc, https://wiki.ca.com/display/CAPADB219/Virtual+Indexes and you can also sign up for our Validate.CA.Com site to see product demos while we developed this enhancement.

    Thanks,
