Is there a metric to monitor the occupancy rate of MANs in zOS?

When referring to the "..MANs in zOS..", would this be the SMF-logging MAN files more specifically or more recently with IBM z/OS improvement, possibly also considering the SMF LOGSTREAMs, if implemented?

SMF type 23 (interval) data provides insight with SMF (MAN or LOGSTREAM) activity.  Have a look at the SMF manual for SMF 23 data-layout.  Also, if you have SAS software, possibly MXG (from Merrill) or CA MICS or IBM Tivoli TDSz or SAS ITRM/ITSV, you will likely find decode event-data from the SMF 23 records.  

And if none of the above are available, consider using DFSORT for decoding the SMF data records, in this case.

The IBM SMF manual may have some useful information on the topic "Using SMF data sets" and also consider the IBM utility output LISTCAT can help with analyzing the SMF MAN file (VSAM) current-state.

 

If you don't already have a DASD storage inventory tool to analyze the physical SMF MAN files, you might consider IBM DCOLLECT (dataset inventory) and look at DFSORT/ICETOOL web-page for utility code with generating reports from the DCOLLECT data source (that presumes you don't have SAS, along with MXG/MICS/TDSz/ITRM to process the DCOLLECT data source).

CA-SYSVIEW does offer some views into SMF.

If from a SYSVIEW session you were to enter the command MENU SMF it will display the options that are available.

Of particular insight is the SMFDATA command.

The SMFDATA command is a dynamic interface to the SYSVIEW process of capturing SMF records. The SMFDATA subtask performs 

As is the case with all CA-SYSVIEW commands when you hit PF1 while on the command it will bring up the SYSVIEW HELP display for the command which will show you the definitions of the INFORMATION and the DATA fields that are on the display.

The SYSVIEW SMF command displays the MANx data sets and shows usage info in the Used (how full) and Status fields.  There are no traditional SYSVIEW thresholds/metrics that you can define to alert on the usage of these data sets, but the System Condition Monitor (SCM) does contain an IMOD that interrogates the SMF display on an interval and displays the result on the SCM command display.  You can find more info about SCM at this link:
