  • 1.  Does client-server password allow for mixed case and special characters?

    Posted Apr 07, 2020 10:59 AM
Just checking in. Since it may be a while before passphrase is implemented (please vote everyone! - it's primary election day here in Wisconsin ;)  ).

I am checking to see if anyone knows of any restrictions on the password regarding mixed-case and special characters.
I am just beginning my search of the standard support and techdoc pages.

Any hints, how-tos, gotchas, caveats, etc. from anyone who may have been through this already?

Thanks in adavance for any and all feedback.

    Hi Doug,
Research of old support cases indicates that Gen will pass mixed-case passwords from client to server without any change i.e. it will preserve the mixed-case of the password for processing by the server side External Security Manager. User exits like TIRSLEXT for Gen CICS Sockets Server allow passwords to be uppercased if needed:
    https://techdocs.broadcom.com/content/broadcom/techdocs/us/en/ca-mainframe-software/devops/ca-gen/8-6/reference/user-exits/z-os-user-exits/z-os-middleware-user-exits-cics-tcp-ip-direct-connect-exits/tirslext-cics-sockets-server-listener-exit.html
Special characters should also be handled "as is".
The above should apply irrespective of whether you are setting userid/password in the application or using a Client Manager to do so and irrespective of whether you are using Standard/Enhanced Security.

As you say the wider Gen user community might also like to share their experiences on this topic.

    Hope that helps

    Regards,

    Lynn
