  • 1.  Using SMS Management Classes with CA-1

    Posted Dec 27, 2012 03:08 PM
Twice in two years we have looked at using SMS Management Classes with CA-1. It is unknown teritory to us, but it looks like it may have some benefits.

Does anyone use SMS Managment Clasesses with CA-1?
    How do you use it?
    Why do you use it?
Did you have any issues implementing it.
    Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you and have a Terrific day!

We use sms for almost all of our dataset allocations. Tape allocations are designated by using a UNIT=CARTV in our shop. Once the ACS routines see that the unit designation is CARTV, it assigns a DATACLAS, STORCLAS and STORGRP that is for TAPE. It does not matter id the dataset would be sms managed if it were disk or not, once the ACR routines determin that it is TAPE, it does its thing.

    Bryan,

If you are using an SMS-managed robotic/virtual tape solution, then the ACS routines would assign a MGMTCLAS, STORCLAS and STORGRP for the tape dataset. If it was not SMS managed however, you wouldn't get past DATACLAS for tape datasets. However, the SMS MGMTCLAS that CA 1 currently obtains is NOT the same MGMTCLAS assigned during ALLOCATION processing (though it might be) because currently we drive our own call to ACS passing those parameters allowed by IBM (which is a smaller subset of the parameters passed via the ALLOCATION call to ACS).

However, we are finishing an enhancement to CA 1 to record the ALLOCATION-assigned MGMTCLAS in the TMC for SMS-managed tape devices. Is that something you might be interested in testing?

Hello, Are you looking for information on how CA 1 will handle the expiration of tapes if you implement the 2 options of SMS and SR?

I have read about how CA1 handles expiration when using SMS. Finding information about it wasn't difficult. But what is the value? Are other customers using it? What are the gotchas and downsides? Are the benifits worth making the change?

Each time we look at it we have rejected it because we don't know that it will actually help us.

Not many clients have started to use this. CA 1 does not obtain the management class from the JCL so your ACS routines have to be coded so that the DSN, JOBNAME, and UNIT can be used to determine the management class. Then the only retention we use is the max retention for the class. Because of this many clients have chosen to not use it.
