To setup a silent mode installation, I followed the procedure outlined in:

Install or Upgrade in Silent Mode - CA XCOM Data Transport for Windows - 11.6 Service Packs - CA Technologies Documentat…

It all went very well, until I got to the part where I "view status information about the installation in the default xcominstaller.log file in the temporary directory: %temp%\xcominstaller.log".

    It was not there.

I tried to change the defaults by keying in "set TEMP=c:\TEMP" and repeating the procedure.

Again, I could not find that log file.

I did find output files under %XCOM-HOME%\Uninstaller\Logs\*install*.log ,

but these files only included messages from the un-install, not from the install.

    What have I missed?

    Yohai

    Hi Yohai,

If you have used steps  mentioned under "Synchronously"  to run the installer, you can use echo %ERRORLEVEL% to check for the status of installation.

In windows, %TEMP% directory changes from user to user. Normally the path of Temp folder will be

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp

If you have ran the installation with "Run as administrator" option, you need to check for the log file at that user's temp directory. In short, Open the command prompt again as you did earlier to run the installer and issue command "echo %TEMP%"  to check for the temp directory in use.

Alternately, you can search for file with name "xcominstaller.log" under <systemdrive>:\Users directory.

    Hi Shiva,

I did use the "Synchronously" method, and when I keyed "echo %ERRORLEVEL%", it displayed a zero.

I performed the installation under my domain user, which is defined as administator.

I could not find "AppData" under C:\Users\<my-user>, but when I used the SEARCH option, it did find the xcominstaller.log file. Do you have an idea why is that? I appologize if this is something that any person who works on a Microsoft platform should know, I am mainly a mainframe guy.

When I opened the file, I realized that it documents the first XCOM installation, and all the un-install operations that followed - but not the re-installations that I made in silent mode. Is that what is supposed to happen? If not' please offer your thinking. I would like the technician who performs the field installations to be able to see some log of the silent mode installation that he/she had performed.

    Regards, Yohai

    Hi Yohai,

If echo %ERRORLEVEL% displays zero, then your installation is successful.

Appdata is hidden folder in Windows which can be seen only when you enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives" option from Tools -> Folders -> View. However if you run search with specific file name, it will be able to locate file.

Both Install/Uninstall operations uses same file xcominstaller.log to record actions. In case you perform install/uninstall operations more than once, old details will be erased and latest install actions will be written to file.

For ex: If you performed install then uninstall followed by re-installation in silent mode, the file will contain details of latest installation actions along with its time stamp.

    Regards,

    Shiva

    Hi Shiva,

I am pasting below the log file that I have got, as I was not able to attach it to this message.

What happened was, that I installed XCOM using the GUI on November 8th, and then un-installed and installed several times on November 14th, in order to customize the silent mode option for the field staff. According to the log file, only the first installation and the un-installations took place.

    Please offer your advice.

    Regards, Yohai

    Hi Yohai,

As per log, I see details of Installation happened on 8th Nov and 4 Uninstallations happened on 14th Nov. You might be wondering where are the details of missing 3 installations. %TEMP% value will be resolved by windows OS and it depends on the environment and user under which the install/uninstall process invoked. I recommend you to search for xcominstaller.log file under C:\Users and you may find another installation log file under administrator user temp files (ex: C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\2)

If you need further information, I recommend you to open a support ticket.  We need few more details to answer further questions and they can't be shared in public forum.

    Regards,

    Shiva

Although I liked having the dialog here, without the pressure to pack things up in a short time :-)
