Others with contention when running concurrent BACKUP and EXTRACT?

    Hello Fellow Listers:

Recently I encountered an unexpected condition, where an on-demand SMFD EXTRACT (with PARM=READ) was running (and had been for some hours), and the regulary-scheduled SMFD SCDS backup job attempted to execute but could not get sufficient exclusive-control on the SCDS, so the backup job failed.

I see where this could happen any time, particularly with SMFD EXTRACT processes that take more than 5 minutes (that is the SMFD BACKUP tolerance).

Unfortunately, raising this concern with CA SMF DIRECTOR support has not been given much in the way of compassion, at least not thus far. Any other clients who also have this unfortunate situation and the resulting error condition are encouraged to let CA know about it. Hopefully some SCDS serialization improvement can be devised to address the contention issue, allowing concurrent EXTRACT jobs and the regular BACKUP to run concurrently, regardless of the EXTRACT job duration.

    Some good news!

CA has agreed to "enhance" SMF DIRECTOR so that any EXTRACT that takes more than 5 minutes will not cause an SMFD SCDS BACKUP process to fail.

Hopefully SMF DIRECTOR sites are backing-up their SCDS database, at least daily, right?

    Have a great week, people!
