  • 1.  CA MAT: How do customers enable developers to use DB2 EXPLAIN ?

In our internal discussions about the future direction of the DB2 EXPLAIN feature the question came, how actually customers so enable their developers to use DB2 Explain when there is a performance impact caused by a SQL statement. So we would like to ask our customers about the situation at their site:

    • Can developers execute EXPLAINs by themselves in any enviroment?
    • Can developers execute EXPLAINS by themselves only in specific enviroments - e.g. on development and/or test systems?
    • Do developers need to request that an EXPLAIN for a certain statement is executed by someone else?
    • Or is there any other way of doing this?

    Any input is welcome!

    Best regards

In our company the developers can use a special-tailored web-based EXPLAIN. This is usable on all environments (production as well).

    Hi Robert,

Thanks for responding. We would be very interested in learning more about the special tailored explain that you mentioned. Does this explain option contain limited explain  functionality? If so, what fields within the explain are of interest to you and your team?

Thanks again for your input Robert.
