Big Data : The 80/20 rules

By Steve Rundle posted Dec 04, 2014 02:00 PM

David Hodgson , the VP data Management Business Unit has just begun a keynote speech on Big data Analytics here at the IUA Technical Conference

It was revealing to hear that 80% of Business data is in a structured form in databases etc. and 20% is unstructured data. We all understand that as IDMS DBAs

But taking *all* the data in an organization then 80% is unstructured and only 20% is structured.  That's a big difference.

Big data analytics will resolve the information contained in this vast amount of unstructured data.

The Big Data session continues

Mike Harer spoke about and gave a demo of CA BDIM (Big Data Infrastructure Management).

Shows that it can perform the management of disparate Haoddp/Big data Platforms from one screen. Looks pretty neat.

(Maybe we should create a requirement for a similar thing for IDMS)

And then we heard from Anil that a partnership with vStorm can help provide th Big data information to Hadoop systems from the mainframe.

The whole session was a little like a sales pitch for a couple of products but did provide some interesting facets to help this DBA  to understand Big data and Hadoop.

Note: Hadoop used to be a stuffed elephant. make of that fact whatever you like.
