Tried 3 times to upgrade from SMP 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 to 7.6 GA and getting "Platform Core 7.6 (7.6.1383)" not installed

    Dear All,

Trying to upgrade from SMP 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 on Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server to SMP 7.6 GA/SP0. The first part of the install process runs correctly and the "install" element is completed. However, it gets to about the 4th-or-so task for the configuration element and it fails with:

Platform Core 7.6 x64 (7.6.1383) (product guid d0e33520-c160-11d2-8612-00104b74a9df, MSI package code guid 7647d075-2f4e-4b1f-9464-ecf0b3d50edb) is returning as not configured and thus is not considered installed

Re-running the upgrade tries the configuration and fails as well.

I am losing faith with 7.6 at the moment and a bit worried when I come to do it properly for customers.

    Kindest regards,

    QuietLeni

    Hi Leni,

Do you upgrade direct from 7.1 to 7.6?

I suggest you upgrade to 7.5 first before you go with 7.6

Silly question but - did you run install "as Administrator". On far too many occasions to mention that upgrading with out "run as Administrator" causes the upgrade to be botched with missing files because of lacking permission.

It could also be your 7.6 install binaries are corrupted.

    Hi Leni,

    Just a FYI.

I performed two upgrades from 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 directly to 7.6 and had no issues so far.

(just to increase the faith part... ;))

    G,

    According to this article:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC7718

It says that I should be able to upgrade from SMP 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 to SMP 7.6 and dawi_x just confirmed that this should go along with now issues.

I am trying one last method before calling this into Symantec Technical Services.

    Kindest regards,

    QuietLeni

    Dear All,

I tried lots of things and "RunAs Administrator" was one of them (which usually works). Also, running as the Altiris Credentials does not do it.

It seems that Task 7 - configuring the Notification Server/Platform Core is the big, bad one.

It seems to think that there is nothing at the end of the Shared Pipe. I have checked the configuration of the SQL server and Shared Pipes is switched on and working OK. I can get to the server via the SQL Server Management Studio, etc.

Hmmm. I have run the ngen commands and switched off the SMA, as is documented. I have recombined the IIS App Pools.

What is wrong? This process is taking 3 hours EACH AND EVERY TIME I DO IT and I am ready to ward people off the product...

    Regards,

    Hi,

If possible, please attach NS logs for the upgrade process until the moment when configuration problem occurs.

    Thank you,

    Alex.

You may want to make sure your certs are still valid. Run the SMPDiag tool to make sure all seemingly obvious issues are tended to before upgrading. Essentially, you want to make sure your 7.1 environment is running perfect with no red flags before you upgrade.

Woo hoo!! I have a result!

I called this one in, as none of the usual processes or suggestions worked. Symantec Technical Support said that the issue is a known issue and is the subject of an ETrack. They did not give me the number, but they did give me a piece of SQL to run.

Once I had run the SQL, which did some operations to the Culture table, the upgrade went through without a hitch!

When I get the ETrack number, I will publish it onto this thread.

    Guys,

As a result of my call, there is now a public article, but SymWISE is down!

Anyway, it is TECH229029. Have a look for that if you get the same issue.

Seems like this is the same as mentioned above for https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/quickstart-guides-migrating-upgrading-altiris-76

We ran into an issue where the configuration of the Altiris Notification Server during the upgrade from the latest 7.5 release failed due to an SQL insert error (violation of constraint PK_String).

Looking in the DB we saw that there was only one single entry with Culture "en-GB" in the CMDB.String table (this should be only "en"). After issuing the following SQL statement, the configuration process finished successfully:

    UPDATE [Symantec_CMDB].[dbo].[String] set Culture='en' WHERE Culture='en-GB'

Maybe someone ran into the same error - hope it helps...

You sure the number is correct?

I can read other articles, but there is no TECH229029.

    @Edit: Ok, it's finally there :)
