How does changing the asset status change the information / data?  When does inventory information go away, if at all, unless asset is deleted? I noticed these statements:

Retired assets release an inventory license, but for software delivery and patch management, the asset record must be deleted to release a license.

How does moving an asset to Retired effect the data / info of that asset?

License recovery - License recovery is dependent on deleting the computer record. For Software Management Solution starting from version 7.5, a license is also released after setting the computer status to any value other than Active

Guess I am looking for when a license is released and what happens to the data because of the change in status.  Is there a paper on that?

    Hi MrAnderson!

    1. In case if managed computer is set to 'Retired', then on NS side license seat node for this computer will be automatically reclaimed

For example, managed computer status is set to 'Retired', on NS I see messages in Altiris Log Viewer that license node reclaimed for Software Management, Inventory and Patch Management solutions.

    Notes:

    • You can set to automatically set 'retired' state for computers which aren't reporting to NS last %N% days (This option is available on "Purging Maintenance" page from SMP Console)
    • In case if you set 'retired' asset status for managed client computer(s) but "Symantec Management Agent' will send own basic inventory or request client policy from NS, then its status will be automatically changed from 'Retired' to 'Active' and this computer will consume license(s) back.

    2. Inventory/Event data remains for such managed computers which have "Retired" asset status. Their inventory/events data will be removed from database in case if retired computers will be deleted.

    3. I had some custom reports to see current solution(s) license consumption by managed computers (There will be a mention regarding purging maintenance settings to make sure that retired

    Example of such report: https://www.symantec.com/connect/downloads/custom-report-see-current-software-management-solution-license-consumption

    Thanks,

    IP.

IP,  You have refered to 'retired' and active.  what about the other statuses like 'In Stock', 'Disposed',  Suspended or others.  Would they now not only not consume a license but the Inventory data is retained until the computer is either deleted or the PURGE is run?

Thanks for your earlier reply.  Just wanting to clarify on the other statuses.

Other Asset statuses like 'In Stock', 'Disposed', "Missed', will reclaim license node for Inventory Solution, Software Management Solution but won't reclaim license node for 'Patch Management Solution'.

Seems like only 'Retired' asset status will reclaim license node for Patch Management Solution.
