Upgrade from 7.5 to 7.6 HF7 - Server plugins not updating

  • 1.  Upgrade from 7.5 to 7.6 HF7 - Server plugins not updating

    We upgraded from CMS 7.5 to CMS 7.6 HF7 a few weeks ago and I've noticed recently on the NS and on our separate Task Server that some of the plugins have not been upgraded (despite most of the clients upgrading fine).

     

    On the NS the plugins that have not upgraded are:

    • Altiris Power Scheme Task Plugin (still on 7.5.3219)
    • Deployment Package Server (still on 7.5.1599)
    • Software Management Solution Agent (still on 7.5.3219)

     

    On the separate Task Server the plugins that have not updated are:

    • Altiris Client Task Server Agent (still on 7.5.3153) - There are 2 of these for some reason - one looks to be 32-bit, the other 64-bit.  Both are still on the same version
    • Altiris Power Scheme Task Plugin (still on 7.5.3219)
    • Deployment Task Server Handler (still on 7.5.3219)
    • Software Management Solution Agent (still on 7.5.3219)

     

    The upgrade policies in the Agents/Plugins section all look OK and are turned on.

    It looks like both the NS and the task server have downloaded the upgraded packages for some of the plugins, but not run them for some reason.  For others, I can't even see that they've downloaded.  

    Any advise on what I can check and how I can get them upgraded?

    Hi,

    For the "separate Task Server" case:

    "Altiris Client Task Server Agent": XP and 2003 OS is not supported for the Task Server in 7.6. You need to have MS .Net Framework version 4.5.1 to be able to upgrade Task Server.

     

    "Deployment Task Server Handler": this one depends on a Task Server plugin - as soon as TS will be upgraded to 7.6 version, DS Task Server Handler should be upgraded automatically. 

     

    "Power Scheme" and "Software Management Solution": check if computers listed in corresponding policies (dbl-click to target under "Apply To" and press "Update Results")

    Settings -> Agents/Plug-ins -> Power Scheme -> Power Scheme Task Plug-in Upgrade

    Settings -> Agents/Plug-ins -> Software -> Software Management -> Software Management Solution Plug-in Upgrade 

    If computers are listed, then on a client side dbl-click to SMA icon and check Software Delivery tab - where the corresponding packages downloaded and that's the execution status?

    Hi Alex,

    Many thanks for the help.  It seems our task server was missing .Net Framework 4.5.x, so after installing that and a bit of manual running of the plugin packages via the agent, I've managed to completely update all the plugins on that site server.

    I've also managed to get all but one of the plugins to update on the NS, but one is flatly refusing to install even when running the package manually.  The plugin that's still failing is the Deployment Package Server plugin.  When running the "Deplyment Package Server Components" upgrade package manually I get a "run failed" error and the run history for the package shows Exit Code 2.

    Any ideas for this one last remaining defiant plugin?

    No prob! (I really glad you are not running remote task server on 2003.. ;-)

    Regarding the "DS for PS" plugin - do you see NS conputer listed under filter "Computers with Deployment Package Server Component upgrade" after "update membership"?

    May you find and attach file: "C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Agent\Logs\Upgrade_DS_PS_Component.log" ?

    (update) I was unable to reproduce issue with DSPS plugin on my server after upgrade from 7.5.SP1 to 7.6

    Seem like the proble is: "NS Package Server is not present" - do you see "Package Server" among the installed plugins on NS?

    Hi Alex - we don't run package services as we only have one site with the NS and separate task site server.  We were advised by support when we did our install that it wasn't needed.

    Will that cause us any problems?

    Hi Chrismcevoy72,

    Well, it should not cause any issues, except the one with "Deployment Package Server Components" upgrade: that plugin has installed Package Server as a pre-requisite and therefore upgrade fails if PS is not installed. I'm not sure why you see "Deployment Package Server Components" plugin on your NS server, could it be that PS was once installed, then "Deployment Package Server Components" installed and then PS uninstalled?

    Anyway, I do not think you need to worry about the "Deployment Package Server Components", it should be save to left it as is.
