  • 1.  SEP 12.1.4013.4013 requires manual updating upon login

    Posted Jan 28, 2015 08:35 AM

Our organization has a managed SEP server and we deploy SEP 12.1.4013.4013 to Macs.  With the previous version of SEP (12.1.1000.0157) the software and definitions updated silently in the background.  This new version forces the user to manually update the software each time upon login.  This being the case (and knowing the passionate resistance this would arouse), I have avoided pushing it out to the Macs.  I have asked our SEP server admin if there is a server-side configuration that is different with the new version and he tells me there isn't.

So my question is - how can we configure this newer version of SEP to update silently in the background?

Thank you for posting in Symantec community.

What's the SEPM version? Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 12.1.2 can only support the Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.4 Mac client at the level of protection technology available for version 12.1.2.

Latest SEP for Mac version is 12.1.5337.5000, have you tried that?

Did you configure sepm as reverse proxy? How is your Mac getting the update?

I believe our SEPM server is configured to supply the updates to the clients.  On the client, the "Management" menu shows our internal SEPM server as teh management server and lists the connection status as "Connected".

SEP clients for Macintosh cannot retrieve updates the same way that Windows clients can from the SEPM or from GUPs. As of SEP version 12.1 RU4 the SEPM can be configured as a reverse proxy for downloading and caching Macintosh LiveUpdate content but this method is only for retreiving the latest Macintosh RU4 content -- i.e. you cannot use this method to provide back-dated definitions to Macintosh clients or content to older Macintosh clients or other platforms. The SEP for Macintosh client must otherwise retrieve definitions from the default Symantec LiveUpdate server or an internal LiveUpdate Administrator server.

Refer this article: Will a managed Symantec Endpoint Protection for Macintosh client update virus definitions automatically from a SEPM or GUP?

If I'm reading all this right, the issue is why users are forced to manually update with this version whereas in previous this was all done automatically.

So essentially you want to know what changed right?
