DCX 8510-8b Adding FC16-48 port blade

  • 1.  DCX 8510-8b Adding FC16-48 port blade

    Good day experts!

    We are planning to install additional 2 FC16-48 port blade on our DCX 8510-8b on the vacant blade slot 4 and slot 9.

    My Questions are as follows

    1.Our DCX 8510-8b is currently running only with 2 power supplies. Do we need to install additional Power supply on the
      2 vacant power supply slot before installing additional FC16-48 port blade?

    2.Do we need to obtain additional license for the additional FC16-48 blades?

    3.Are there any pre-install steps that need to be done before installing the blade?

    4.Will I need to do a firmware upgrade of the blade to match the switch, or will the controllers push the installed version to the blade?

    Please see Below output of slotshow, psshow,licenseshow and firmwareshow for reference. Thank you

    John,

    1.Our DCX 8510-8b is currently running only with 2 power supplies. Do we need to install additional Power supply on the 2 vacant power supply slot before installing additional FC16-48 port blade?

    =>  You can calculate your power requirements by combining the power draws for the various blades and fan units in your configuration. While you may use fewer ports in a given blade, it is always safer to use the power requirement of a fully populated blade. It also depends on the voltage you're running the 8510 at.  There's a section in the attached Hardware Installation Guide (page 123) describing the minimum number of power supplies at 110 and 220 volts depending on the number of blades/ports you're using.

    Your current configuration draws about 1800 watts, the planned one >2000 watts, so you would need 4 power supplies at 220 volts, you would not be able to achieve redundancy at 110 volts.

    2.Do we need to obtain additional license for the additional FC16-48 blades?
    =>  NO

    3.Are there any pre-install steps that need to be done before installing the blade?
    => NO

    4.Will I need to do a firmware upgrade of the blade to match the switch, or will the controllers push the installed version to the blade?
    => No need to do anything for port blades, however you should consider to upgrade to any later target path version of FOS for the whole system
