    Hi all,

Does anybody know is it possible to connect 3 Lenovo chassis with pair of FC5022 switches to Storwize V5100 directly? I have attached picture (PlanningSANconnection.jpg) of planning connections.

Thanks in advance for your answers and opinions.

    Viktor

Hello Viktor, yes, it is possible. You can proceed to implement this solution as you have designed it. Greeting from Brazil!

    Hello @Francisco Vilaca

Thank you for answer. I have some additional questions:
    1. Is it good practice and HA solution?
    2. Do I need to disable NPIV for this solution? One IBM specialist said about it, but I am not totally sure
    3. I have tried to implement this solution for one chassis (chassis 3), but haven't had success. Ports on the storage have designated status. (NPIV is disabled for io_grp0, FabA has implemented for one FC5022, FabB has implemented to another FC5022). What to check more?

    Best regards,
    Viktor

    Hi Viktor
    1. Is it good practice and HA solution?
I do not see any problem regarding HA solution.

    2. Do I need to disable NPIV for this solution? One IBM specialist said about it, but I am not totally sure
I suppose you can disable NPIV.

    3. I have tried to implement this solution for one chassis (chassis 3), but haven't had success. Ports on the storage have designated status. (NPIV is disabled for io_grp0, FabA has implemented for one FC5022, FabB has implemented to another FC5022). What to check more?
    a) What do you mean "I have tried to implement this solution for one chassis (chassis 3)"? Do you mean "NPIV disabled"?; and
    b) What does "designated status" mean?

    Best regards, Francisco.

    Hello @Francisco Vilaca

Sorry, I didn't notice your message early.

We tried to connect chassis number 3 according this scheme, but didn't have success. One of IBM engineer said that we need to disable NPIV for this solution. But it didn't help us too. Ports by host were not active in the storage as ports on Windows Server. I don't remember exactly status of not active ports.

Yes, I know that using upstream switches for SAN design is best variant we company doesn't want to buy them for now.

My colleague decided to use another variant - there are stages (attached as pictures). 1st stage is completed for now, but it is simple way. I am not sure that second and final stage will work properly. And I don't know exactly do we need to implement 3 fabrics: A, B, C or use only one A fabric? Any ideas? I am not expert of SAN networks and need a help.

    Best regards,

    Viktor

send switchshow output to see the state of the host and storage ports current state.
did you make a zoning on FC5022 to connect host ports to v5000?

    Hi @nezih boyacioglu

Current state of connection is good, because we have implemented first stage, according PlanningSANconnection-stage1.jpg. It looks as classical scheme of connection with HA and zones A and B. And I am not sure that connection of chassis 2 and chassis 1 will work properly and how exactly to configure them, according PlanningSANconnection-stage2.jpg and PlanningSANconnection-stage3.jpg

I couldn't implement scheme PlanningSANconnection1.jpg early, though it seems simplest way. I suppose it is for NPIV reason. As I understand correct this feature is virtualization for ports. For example, port 1 of canister 1 has "mirroring" to port 1 canister 2. If canister 1 will down all connection from port 1-4 of canister 1 will work in canister 2 port 1-4 as virtual ports. May be this is a reason why we could implement first way. Yes, we made zoning for FC5022. As I remember correctly it was interesting moment that first scheme works with access gateway mode of FC5022. After implementing FAB A and B on each switch ports on storage and Windows Server port were no active.

Of course, I can show output of switchshow command for current situation. I have attached screenshots.

All right you must zone hosts (port 1, 2, 3, 4) to v5000 (port 0, 29) but ibm cannot recommend hard (port based) zoning for NPIV ports. You should get lstargetportfc command output from v5000, record host io permitted ports, find that ports on your fc5022, create an alias for each one of them, create aliases for your hosts on same switch. Zone'em together. And voila! you will see your hosts on v5000 online.

    @nezih boyacioglu

Are you talking about first scheme or last 3 stage schemes?

All of them is wrong. Different but all wrong. Call your local ibm support or business partner to help you about cabling and zoning. its just a 20 min job. If it takes weeks for you, just leave it to the right guys.

We asked help from IBM and had visiting of one guy from IBM, but he couldn't help us. That's why I asked help in this forum. If you could draw right scheme of connections for 3 chassis and storage, it would be great!

    Well... Answer from IBM support:

" I'm almost sure that this would not be supported, but you could check this in the IBM Storage Systems Interoperation Center:

    https://www-03.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/ssic/interoperability.wss

Input your configuration and from the drop down menus it will filter out the supported configurations about the Storage system.

If the hardware / software is not shown in the drop downs, this means that the configuration is not supported"

    It is very strange situation...

As i said you, you need to hire a SAN consultant for the solution. Your manager dont want to pay for anything but want some solutions. This attitude not works.
