Tech Tip: UIM Total Alarm Count in the Infrastructure Manager (IM) alarm subconsole is not accurate

Feb 05, 2018 11:49 AM

Environment:

- UIM 8.5.1
- Infrastructure Manager (IM) 4.10 (Revision 1.0)
- nas 8.42

Problem Description:

On the right-hand side of the IM window the "Tot: <value>" shown was not the same as the total number of alarms. The number of alarms in the bottom of the IM window was listed as 1745 but the Tot: <value> was much lower, e.g., 25

Total Alarm Count inaccuracy

Other Symptoms:

IM console was very slow to update, e.g., alarms were coming in slowly into the alarm subconsole window.

- Increased the alarm_enrichment memory parameters from 64m/1024m to 2048/4096 then cold starting the nas and AE probes had little effect. The alarm count went up to 500 but was still NOT accurate.

Resolution:

- Upgraded nas from v8.42 to v8.56

You MUST add a new parameter to the nas setup. See below.

From the Release Notes regarding nas 8.56:

- In some environments, alarms are seen to load very slowly into the Infrastructure Manager console, and sometimes the complete list will not load.  If you experience this problem, add the following config key to the "setup" section of nas.cfg:
  “get_alarms_force_wait = yes”
This release is compatible with all versions of UIM going back to 7.6 and forward to 8.5.1 and beyond.

You MUST add this new parameter to the nas 8.56 under the setup section->

“get_alarms_force_wait = yes”

- cold start nas and AE at the same time (Deactivate-Activate)

Then the total alarm count was working as expected, loaded quickly and was 100% accurate.
