Tech Tip: NFA 9.3.0 Upgrade Path

Oct 16, 2014 03:07 PM

**With the release of 9.3.1 please follow the new 9.3.1. Upgrade Path doc Tech Tip: NFA 9.3.3 Upgrade Path**

In order to upgrade to NFA 9.3.0 you must be on Windows 2008 R2 and you must be at NFA 9.2.1.

  • If you are currently on Windows 2008 R2 and RA 9.0.161 you will need to follow the migration path below:

1) Before starting any upgrade, regardless of what version you are running, you MUST make backups of all of your Databases on the RA Console, Harvester, and DSA.

Pages 158-164 of the NFA 9.3 Admin Guide has steps on how to back your your databases for each server.

2) Upgrade from 9.0.161 to 9.1.3 following the NFA 9.1.3 Upgrade Guide.

3) Once the upgrade to NFA 9.1.3 completes, there is a period of time where your historical data will be migrated to the new database format.

You need to wait for this historical data migration to complete on each of your DSA's before proceeding with the upgrades to 9.2.

To verify that your Historical Data migration completed you can run the following command on your DSA's:

    mysql -P3308 -D nqrptr -t -e "select from_unixtime(value) from settings where name='migrationCompletedTime';"

If this query returns a time, it means the historical migration completed and you can upgrade to NFA 9.2.0.

4) Upgrade from 9.1.3 to 9.2.0 following the NFA 9.2.0 Upgrade Guide.

5) Upgrade from 9.2.0 to 9.2.1 following the NFA 9.2.1 Upgrade Guide.

6) Upgrade from 9.2.1 to 9.3.0 following the NFA 9.3.0 Upgrade Guide and the Release Notes.

**Note** If you have NPC installed on the same server as NFA, you will need to migrate NPC to a new server before upgrading to NFA 9.3.0 using this document:

Tech Tip: NFA 9.3 Upgrade Tip - How to Migrate Netqos Performance Center(NPC) to a New Server

**Note** Upgrading to NFA 9.3.0 will require an upgrade of MySql to version 5.6.  This may add additional time to your upgrade since all of your databases will be backed up while the upgrade runs.  This will also require additional free space during the upgrade to ensure there is enough room to backup your databases as noted in this document:  Tech Tip: NFA New Mysql version 5.6 pre-upgrade considerations

  • If you are still running Windows 2003, 9.1.4 will be the latest version in which you can upgrade to.

You can upgrade from 9.0.161 to NFA 9.1.4, following the same upgrade instructions outlined in the NFA 9.1.3 Upgrade Guide.(There is no upgrade guide for 9.1.4 as it was a minor release)

Also note, there is no upgrade path from 9.1.4 to 9.2.x or 9.3.0 at this time.

**Update, with the release of NFA 9.3.1 please follow the new upgrade path documented here Tech Tip: NFA 9.3.3 Upgrade Path

FYI there is a new 9.3.1 upgrade path doc published here Tech Tip: NFA 9.3.1 Upgrade Path

May 05, 2015 03:49 PM

Update: With the release of NFA 9.3.1 CA NFA 9.3.1 GA Announcement you can now upgrade directly to 9.3.1 from 9.1.4, 9.2.1, or 9.3.0.

The Upgrade Guide, along with the rest of the NFA 9.3.1 documentation can be found here:

Sorry for the confusing, an issue has just come to our attention that affects the current upgrade from 9.1.4 to 9.2.0.

So at this time if you are on Windows 2008 we are recommending upgrading from 9.0.161->9.1.3->9.2.0->9.2.1.

If you are on Windows 2003 we recommend upgrading to 9.1.4 which includes the key fixes in 9.2.1.

Upgrade paths from 9.1.4 are currently under review.

I apologize for any confusion and I will post more details as I come across them.

Your changes today make it more clear. However, now what does someone do if they are on 9.1.4? Could step 4 be changed to:

4)Upgrade from 9.1.3 (or 9.1.4) to 9.2.0 following the NFA 9.2.0 Upgrade Guide. You must be running Windows 2008 from this point on.

Jan 08, 2015 10:41 AM

Looks good Stuart_Weenig thanks.

Jan 08, 2015 10:23 AM

Ok, i updated both step 2 and step 4. Look ok?

Jan 08, 2015 10:07 AM

Stuart, yes step 2 is right, since there was no full Upgrade guide released as per my last comment above.

If you are already on 9.1.3, and you are on Windows 2008R2 you can upgrade directly to 9.2.0 and then to 9.2.1.

If you on 9.1.3 and still on Windows 2003, we would advise upgrading to 9.1.4.

Jan 07, 2015 06:05 PM

Looks like step 4 is fixed.

Is step 2 right? Should you upgrade to 9.1.4 using the 9.1.3 guide?

Also, what do you do if you're on 9.1.3? Should you still do all steps because you have to be on 9.1.4 before steps 3-5 apply?

Jan 07, 2015 06:03 PM

Stuart, good catch on step 4. I updated this doc when 9.1.4 was released to reflect the updated recommend migration path and missed that line.

Step 4 now reads as it should.

4)Upgrade from 9.1.4 to 9.2.0 following the NFA 9.2.0 Upgrade Guide.

Basically 9.1.4 was a service pack to 9.1.3.

9.1.4 has critical fixes that were in 9.2.1 but were not in 9.1.3, so we are recommending upgrading to 9.1.4 instead of 9.1.3 to avoid any potential defects in 9.1.4.

Being that 9.1.4 was only a minor release the documentation was not fully updated, just the Release Notes and Readme, which is why I said to follow the 9.1.3 upgrade guide as it outlines the full upgrade procedure.

We are working on getting the documentation updated to reflect this as well.

I just took my first look at this article and it isn't clear. It seems that 9.1.3 and 9.1.4 are used interchangeably. For example, step 2 says to upgrade to 9.1.4 using the 9.1.3 upgrade guide. Then step 4 says to upgrade from 9.1.3 to 9.2 (wouldn't you be on 9.1.4 if you were doing the steps in order?).

Jan 05, 2015 11:53 AM

Note this document was just updated to reflect that you can upgrade directly from RA 9.0.161 to NFA 9.1.4.

We recommend this as the migration path at this point, as opposed to going from RA 9.0.161 to NFA 9.1.3 first.

NFA 9.1.4 Supports both Windows 2003 and 2008.

NFA 9.1.4 includes some key fixes that were not available in NFA 9.1.3.

I must concur strongly with Satya, I have experienced a number of customers who had same issue. Migrated from RA 9.0 to 9.1 then onto 9.2, but hadn't checked data migration between steps 1-2, before moving to 9.2.x.

Dec 03, 2014 01:33 AM

Detailed upgrade path. Good one.

it is important to wait till data gets migrated from 9.0.161 to 9.2. If you hurry and do a back-to-back upgrade, then you may end with gaps in data and a probable data loss.

It was actually just released today, the announcement is below:

Another very important item on this would be that as of 9.2.1, NPC is no longer supported on the same machine as any of the NFA components. If you have this type of configuration you will need to migrate NPC to another machine prior to upgrading per page 10 of  the Release Notes.

Thank you.  And when can we expect 9.2.1 to be released?
