Introduction:

This is a tech doc describing how licenses are used with CA Spectrum including limits and model types  affected. In order to explain these easily it is split out into separate questions.

Question:

How are licenses used and implemented in CA Spectrum?

Answer:

Licensing in spectrum and how it is implemented has a wide scope with multiple questions / answers as detailed below.

Question:

Is there a limit to the number of device licenses that can be used in spectrum?

Answer:

Spectrum does not limit the number of devices to be monitored and there is no limit to the number of devices that can be assigned licenses. However, restrictions would apply in terms of the number of models that could be used until performance would be impacted (this varies according to versions.

Legally you would be expected to follow the device limit as per your license agreement.

Question:

If a customer purchases device based Spectrum, is their device count enforced by the technology?

Answer:

No, there is no software enforcement the device limit in the Spectrum Device-based Suite, the enforcement is a legal/contractual one.

Question:

If I purchase a 1000 device license, would Spectrum refuse to discover / model device 1001?

Answer:

Using the Spectrum Device-based Suite, device 1001 would in fact be discovered, but as mentioned above the enforcement is a contractual one.

Question:

Is there a concise way in which to see how many devices count against the license?

Answer:

As of 9.1 / 9.2 you can use the “All Accountable Models” to get a definitive count.  Prior to 9.1 All Devices Search gives a good approximation to accurately determine if you are within contract.

Question:

Are there any models that do not count as accountable models- If yes what are some examples?

Answer:

Not all models are considered accountable models some examples of these would be Pingables, “virtual” models (Ie EventAdmin, eventmodels, clouds, lans etc) BUT Workstations (hosts) do count.

Question:

In terms of licensing what can be generally defined as a device:

Answer:

A simple thumb rule would be anything more than basic up/down in Spectrum, means you are leveraging Spectrum capabilities and would therefore require a license.
