Tech Tip: Upgrade CCC 2.94 Apache Tomcat from 7.0.70 to 7.0.73 (Windows)

Jan 05, 2017 07:00 AM

Apache released a patch for Tomcat to address several vulnerabilities arising from recent internet attacks. Upgrade your CCC 2.9.4 Apache Tomcat installation by following these steps (Windows only):

1. Download and extract the apache-tomcat-7.0.73-windows-x64.zip file from this location:

   http://mirror.reverse.net/pub/apache/tomcat/tomcat-7/v7.0.73/bin/apache-tomcat-7.0.73-windows-x64.zip

2. Decompress the zip file. The folder structure should look as follows:

3. Stop the existing Apache Tomcat service.

4. Rename the ApacheTomcat folder from <ccc-install-folder>\ApacheTomcat to <ccc-install-folder>\ApacheTomcat_Backup.

5. Copy the extracted apache-tomcat-7.0.73 folder into the <ccc-install-folder>.

6. Rename the apache-tomcat-7.0.73 folder in <ccc-install-folder> to ApacheTomcat.

7. Copy the conf and webapps subfolders from ApacheTomcat_Backup to ApacheTomcat, replacing the existing ones.

8. Start the Apache Tomcat service.

9. Verify that the new Apache Tomcat version number appears correcty in the URL (http://<ip_address>:port/) and in the following two log files:

  • <ccc-install-folder>\ ApacheTomcat \logs\ca_ccc-stderr
  • <ccc-install-folder>\ ApacheTomcat \logs\catalina

Hi David

AFAIK, this is purely to address the Tomcat vulnerabilities.  It has no impact on the functioning of DM and CCC.

Hi

What impact does this upgrade have on the Application?

Is it something noticeable or will it only address the vulnerabilities arising from recent internet attacks mentioned?

Hi Adrian,

This procedure was approved just for this specific upgrade in 2.9.4 for 7.0.70 to 7.0.73,

in the future each will be looked at on a case by case basis. But for minor upgrade

this was clean and fast method that I am sure they will look at if needed up the road.

Is this approach only supported for upgrade from Apache Tomcat 7.0.70 to 7.0.73 for CCC 2.9.4?

  • Can this general approach be utilized for prior versions of CCC (say, 2.9.2 or 2.9.3)?
  • It would be understandable if there were restrictions against using this approach for major upgrades of Tomcat (eg, Tomcat 7 to Tomcat 8), but for future equivalent minor revisions / patch releases, can we use this approach and remain covered by CA Support?

Thanks.
