We have received multiple enhancement requests from our customers on the topic of the Automic Automation Engine and Automic Agents ability to send secure outbound email AKA SMTP over TLS/SSL.

We would like to understand how our customers email servers are configured: Does your corp mail server enforce implicit TLS or does it still allow explicit TLS negotiation in cleartext using STARTTLS?

We welcome your input on this!

    Hi @Kaj Wierda ,

I asked the collegue related to SMTP in the company, he did not explain much, but he still wrote a few sentences :)  I'm forward it in case it helps.

"Our smtp configuration accepts requests with TLS encryption from outside. In mail sending, if the other party supports TLS, it first tries to communicate over TLS encryption as a TLS offer."

    Have a nice day.

Our company is enforcing to setup SMTP server email encryption (TLS/SSL). We look forward to this feature in Automic.

    Hi @Kaj Wierda

I forwarded that exact question to the person in charge of SMTP and here's the reply:

here is the answer: TLS/SSL - Explicit mode

    Communication schema:

    1. Client connects to the server.
    2. Client explicitly requests TLS/SSL encryption to be switched on.
    3. Client talks to the server using encrypted channel.
    4. Username + password is sent encrypted.

After talking to one team members that deal with the email system, they stated basically the following:

Our secure relay supports both TLS and STARTTLS at this time but are unsure if we will keep the STARTTLS option, though we would prefer that all use TLS only if possible.

Thanks to all who have responded her and via private message. Based on your feedback, we will deliver secure SMTP for the Automation Engine and Automic Agents with both implicit TLS as well as STARTTLS support.
