  • 1.  VMWare in MCS - is there a way to whitelist the hosts you want to monitor

    Posted Jun 21, 2019 11:33 AM
We are using MCS to monitor VMware environments for different customers.  For some customers, we monitor all ESX hosts while other tens to want to use a white list.   Is there a way to white list the ESX hosts you want to monitor?

By Design, the short answer is no!

    Maybe some Custom Script.

You can check or create an Idea at:

Wait to see ir someone else can help in a Custom Way.

If the end result is to have the system not show up in USM and reports the only thing out of the box I can think of would be the discovery_server exclude list.

Hi Reba! We don't use the MCS b/c of this and other reasons.
Still much much easier to use vmware in IM GUI and just un-check what you don't want monitored and excluded.

May not be the best answer but if you config the service account which you use to connect to vCenter to able to see only the ESX hosts you want to manage (or exclude the ESX hosts you don't want to see), that should do what you want.

    Hi Reba,

MCS has some limitations for this type of use case.  It is best to use AC, with Monitoring Templates as you can filter Host you don't want.  You can also use multiple templates as well. Hence the reason for filtering, you can completely exclude or use a different template.  It also has some nice other default OOB features built into the default templates, you can copy and use.

I would not use IM to manage this probe anymore, as AC has some many more features with the Template Editor.

Also, not sure if this will work on ESX Hosts but there is a feature where you can add a key to exclude VM's.  https://ca-broadcom.wolkenservicedesk.com/external/article?articleId=129196

The other way to do it is on the client end, in VMware, the permissions they set for the user you specify when connecting to vcenter don't grant that user permission in VC to the ESX host(s). That's the other way to do this. The user won't see these hosts thus no issue.
