  • 1.  NMS Agents in CA Spectrum

    Posted May 08, 2018 08:52 AM

    Hi,

Does CA-Spectrum utilizes any agents in the network in order to discover network devices and how does CA Spectrum bridge to other non SMTP technologies?

    Thanks,

    Sheethal

    Greetings Sheethal,

CA Spectrum itself, does not reply on agents for discovery. It uses SNMP for that. However, we do have integrations with CA Unified Infrastructure Management (UIM), CA SystemEDGE agents, CA Performance Management, and CA  Virtual Network Assurance, to provide a more holistic monitoring solution for your network.

For more information regarding how Spectrum discovers devices see the "CA Spectrum Modeling and Managing Your It Infrastructure" documentation (https://docops.ca.com/ca-spectrum/10-2-3/en/managing-network/modeling-and-managing-your-it-infrastructure).

For more information regarding CA Unified Infrastructure Management see https://www.ca.com/us/products/ca-unified-infrastructure-management.html

For more information regarding CA Performance Management see https://www.ca.com/us/products/network-performance-monitoring.html

For more information regarding CA Virtual Network Assurance see https://www.ca.com/us/products/ca-virtual-network-assurance.html

    Thank you,

    Brad

    Thanks Brad for response.

You said that CA Spectrum does not use agents but it uses SNMP for discovery but what about Non-SNMP devices?Does it uses any agents or any other method to discover Non-SNMP devices?

    Thanks,

    Sheethal

You can discover non-snmp devices as pingable models for availability monitoring alone.

    Hi Sheethal,

CA Spectrum is a SNMP based management solution which can talk to any device which is SNMP compliant . It can even manage device running SNMP agents like the Net-SNMP or SystemEDGE etc.,

It may not be able to talk to any non-snmp devices directly except via ICMP, if the device has a IP address

Do you have an example of the non-snmp device you are planning to monitor ?

Non SNMP covers many technologies so if you have specific examples, that would be helpful.  For example, Spectrum supports TL1 devices via the TL1 Gateway ( TL1 Gateway - CA Spectrum - 10.2 to 10.2.3 - CA Technologies Documentation  ).  Many, many years ago, Spectrum supported DECNet and SNA.  Brad mentioned VNA which uses REST API for SDN and SD-WAN.  So, technically Spectrum isn't SNMP only  Having said that, SNMP is a robust and widely used industry standard and that's why Spectrum has so much built around SNMP.  As new technologies such telemetry ( Overview of the Junos Telemetry Interface - Technical Documentation - Support - Juniper Networks  ) become popular, you'll see more support for that in Spectrum.
