Subject: Flow State soon exposed on Rally editors: Coming this Thursday, May 13, 2021
Hello everyone,
This change has been released and is now in production.
Regarding the questions:
- @Matt Seitz: Give Subscription/Workspace/Project admins the option to make fields visible/hidden by default.
- This change will be investigated/researched when we start work on the admin area.
- @Neil Goodwin
- Flow State not displayed in admin field list
- This needs further investigation. The original intent was for flow state to never be exposed in the app, which has since changed.
- Can Flow State be added as a field under Notification Rules?
- Please feel free to submit this enhancement request via feedback. I will make a note of this as well and it will go through our prioritization process.
Thanks,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,
I see the Flow State on Stories now, and it no longer shows as mandatory.
Two questions:
- I do not see the Flow State field under User Story fields on the admin side. Can we hide the field per project like other OOTB Rally fields?
- Can Flow State be added as a field under Notification Rules? Users would like to be notified if the FLow state changes (which may not change the Schedule State).
Thank you!

It would be nice for Rally to give Subscription/Workspace/Project admins the options to make fields visible/hidden by default. If an admin knows that most of their team won't be using a field, it's a pain to ask every user to manually hide it.

Hi @Tamara Turkai,
I was trying to explain this in my previous message.
Exposing new fields always releases as 'visible' by default since these changes are otherwise hard to discover. It is very easy however for a user to hide this field from their editor if they do not want to see it exposed.
I understand where you are coming from regarding your request and that not all users will see this as an enhancement. However, communicating and reaching all Rally users to let them know that a new field has been exposed on our editors but, its visibility default is set to 'hidden' is quite an impossible task. It would greatly impact the discoverability of this change.
Best,
Andrea

Another question for Andrea. Is it possible that this field be defaulted to hidden and then if teams need to use it they go make it visible? My mix of iterative-based versus flow-based teams is pretty evenly divided and it would be more helpful for my company that we communicate that this functionality is avaialbe for teams that do want to use it and they add to their views.

Hi @Tamara Turkai, Hi everyone,
no, users will not be able to select a flow state that is not properly synced to their schedule state or vice versa.
The selection of one state will update the other state based on the existing Team Board configuration.
We are aware that this change will not be seen as an improvement by all users, since not all teams use the Team Board.
It's important to note though that not exposing this field on our editors has led to pushback on Team Board adoption for some of our customers and this enhancement request kept coming up in feedback.
As Sheila described above and this is a case we have heard a lot: Users make edits to work items using our editors and they would prefer to make all edits at once, rather than to have to move the card on the Team Board once their editor edits have been saved.
Exposing new fields always releases as 'visible' by default since these changes are otherwise hard to discover. It is very easy for a user to hide this field from their editor if they do not want to see it exposed.
Thanks for all of your feedback and your questions.
Best,
Andrea

Question? Can the user update the Flow Field and have a different mapping than what is configured on their Team Board? In other words, can they independently update the Flow State than the Schedule State? I'm concerned that we'd end up with users that have Flow State to something that signifies done/accepted and the Schedule State is still marked as Defined.

Hello everyone,
Do you use Rally's Team Board? Do you wish you could place a card in the proper Team Board column upon creation?
Rally now includes 'Flow State' as a field in our detail editor.
Rally's Team Board allows teams to customize their team's work flow with flow states. Teams map these flow states to schedule states to ensure a coupling of their team's flow with how schedule states are managed in their workspace. When a flow state mapping is defined, editing the flow state will also automatically update the schedule state within the editor.
Rally has now added the 'flow state' field to the detail editor so that teams that use a Team Board can edit the flow state directly when editing work items.
Field Exposure
The Flow State field will now display in the detail editor by default.
Please note that you can use our drag & drop field functionality to reorder your fields, in case you would prefer 'flow state' and schedule state to show up together when viewed in the editor.
Changes to the field order are personal settings for just your user.
Show/Hide Field
Users can control if the flow state field is displayed within their view of the detail editor by using the show/hide field functionality. If a team doesn't use the team board or doesn't have flow states defined, team members can hide this field on their editor.
Show/Hide field display changes are also personal settings for just your user.
This change will be released on Thursday May 13, 2021.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Best,
Andrea & The Product Team
