Wild card search in free form text fields

Is there the ability to use a wild card to search in a free form text field?  For example, if the text entered into the field is "abc" and you search for "Abc" you will not get a match.  I tried % or *, but neither work and I did not see any help content related to it.  

I appreciate any guidance you may share.

Do you have an example of how you're searching?  Is it in the search box in the UI or is it via an API query?
