R12.5 to R17.1 Upgrade

  • 1.  R12.5 to R17.1 Upgrade

    Posted Sep 16, 2019 02:06 PM
Hi,   working on an upgrade from R12.5 to R17.1 and running into a error when it goes to Migrating CA Service Desk Manager.  It seems really odd.  Support recommended the following techdoc: 54314, which I reviewed and made some changes.  But nothing has changed.

    This is from the install.log
2019/09/12 11.24.51.695 INFO  [DeployThread: Migrating CA Service Desk Manager] [ActiveProcessHolder] Start Monitor. Process ID (PID): 1844

    Stops here everytime....

Any suggestions or additional information would be appreciated.

    David........

Is the MDB indeed on a remote server?

Are you running the 17.1 installer locally or via a network share?

Try running the upgrade process via 'products\SDM\setup.exe' on the 17.1 DVD to see if that makes a difference.

    Paul,

Just to make sure, are you sure :)
It looks so different, like the old way before all the fancy stuff..
but when I said to start the install process, it stated it was going to install r12.9.
Just wanted to make sure, it was a labeling issue and not actually going to install r12.9.

Like I said it is so different, from what is done today.  I do remember I use to run migrate_to_r17_0.vbs to restart the migrate process.

Thanks for the suggestion, just want to do a double check....

    David..........

I presume this is a non-PROD environment that you are testing the upgrade on and you have the appropriate backups/snapshots taken.

Just to confirm - you are using DVD500000000001054 as the 17.1 ISO?

yes, have all the backups and yes it is a swingbox.
I have to double check on the ISO at the site,  I think its 1042, which means I have to get 1054.
    Thanks Paul, appreciate your help.
    Cheers

    Paul,

I just check download management, all I see 1045, and not 1054?

    1054 does NOT have Catalog
    1042 does have Catalog

    PAUL,

OK, tried what you suggested, but this is so strange.  Still came up talking about R12.9.
Just let it run, then pdm_configure started.  When it gets to the Database configuration and I click Next.
    get the following message
    database
well that didn't work real well...
The database you are trying to use was previously configured to bye used by server (????????)..........

So do I simply say ok and cross my fingers...

cannot thank you enough for your help...

    David.........

This is because this MDB was used by a previous SDM install.

Did you clear out the contents of the 'dlgsrv' MDB table?

Sorry but it has been awhile since I had to think about SDM 12.5 :)

I agree Paul, it has been a while too.   Ok, will clear out the dlgsrv.
    And then say 'Yes'

So what is this exactly doing..
will I have to run something after this or will the upgrade be done....

    Paul,

That didn't work, so I not sure at all what to do next.  Except do a VM restore and do a rethink.
SDM is getting an error on Database check failure...  I think we're going to have to upgrade to something else ie R14.1 and then upgrade to R17.1
really concerns me, the Broadcom, may have never really tested this....   I will let you known..  Also if you have any other ideas.

    David............

Got some good news and bad news

Good news - I was able to upgrade successfully from SDM 12.5 to 17.1 in an internal environment (Windows 2003, SQL 2005 and a local MDB)

Bad news - that means that it is something to do with your environment and/setup.

In your case, is the MDB indeed on a remote server?

yes, its on a remote database...
    is this the problem....

would it be better/possible to do a 2 step upgrade.
    R12.5 to R14.1 to R17.1

    Thanks again.

If you run 'sql_check_db -c -s <MDB server name> on the Service Desk server via a command prompt, what does it return ?

Verify that the data in the USP_SERVERS and dlgtsrv are what is expected.

Do you have the option to move the MDB database locally to the SDM server?

    dlgtsrv
    1 1 D0001SDA-SWG-10 Local System (D0001SDA03) D0001SDA-SWG-10 NULL 9100 NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL

    usp_servers is empty

not sure if the database migration every ran.

As to moving the mdb to the that server...  I would say it is a possibility..
If it works and doesn't require a double upgrade, I am for it
