We run performance tests up to 700 -800 tps on virtual services up to long hours of 12 hours and all this runs on one physical lisa server.
And recently lisa server is responding lil slow and performance tests are disturbed.

So we are thinking to use load balancing mechanism to spread the load between 2 virtual servers of same capacity also with minimal or no changes at the application configurations.

Has anyone implemented load balancing to lisa servers any time. Need some input on configuring one if there is any.

    thanks

    Hi,

I have no experience with putting a load balancer in front of 2 lisa servers, just some generic thoughts:

Basically, both these lisa VSEs would be unaware that they are part of such an high-availability architecture. So, from LISA point of view there is no configuration needed AFAIK.

Configuration changes are in your SUT and in the setup of the load balancer.

The assumption for such an architecture to work as expected would be that the virtual service VSMs are:

    • Stateless (no conversations); if some virtual services would be stateful (conversations) then the loadbalancer would have to be configured with sticky sessions option
    • No use of the "shared memory map" feature

    Cheers,

    Danny

    Hi Vinay
You have mentioned that things were fine upto certain point and you have perceived slowness in VS response off late. What do you think might have caused this ? Are there any infrastructure changes/configuration changes/fixes effected recently ?

As you have mentioned performance test, I assume that you are using your VSE in performance mode. Did you try optimizing the capacity setting for your Virtual Services ?

    regards
    Sankar

    Hi
Performance Mode is on on this server, and also this has huge set of services around 150 services which are used in performance testing.
Also since the application sending huge tps we have set the required amount of capacity/threading for each depending on the load it usually receives.
We did not do any infrastructural changes as such, also the response times we are seeing is across the board and not specific to any services.

Sometimes we do make sure to recycle the entire server but that doesn't seems to be right approach as we have tests running every day.

    thanks
    Vinay

    Hi Vinay,

You need identical services deployed on multiple VSEs, which will be configured under a load balancer. The SUT have to configure the LoadBalancer hostname instead of VSE hostname from where, the requests will be distributed based on the configured algo.

    Thanks.

    Thank you Vaibhav,
Did you mean, Multiple vses on same server or vse on multiple servers.
Could you pls let me know what kind of load balancer have you used in order to distribute the load.

    thanks
    Vinay

    Hi Vinay,

VSEs must be on different server to leverage the distribution mechanism. In my case, I have used F5 Load balancer in my previous implementation.

    Thanks.
