ETC's

We recently started using Resource Management in the new UI and continue to learn the ins and outs.  

Our latest issue is changing Allocations on a project.  We have two projects where the project manager needs to add allocations to the team, however when he adds the allocations there are no ETC's generated based on the Allocations. When do ETC's appear?

Because there are not ETC's he cannot change the end date of the task to be the new task date.  Why could this be happening?

When he changes the end date of the task, the system automatically puts it back to the July 5.

When do ETC's appear?
You would need to enter them - if its a new task then you can enter it at task level, but if its an existing task with assignments (resources on a task) then at assignment level and the task etc is the sum of all the assignment etcs.

Why could this be happening?
Its happening because there is no ETC - the system thinks that there is no (more?) work to do so you can't extend the end date past the last recorded "effort". Stick some ETC in and you will be able to.

On 15.6.1.  Expect this applies to other New UX versions, too:

 

• When creating project in New UX, must select a template
• If the template has a WBS (tasks), then
• These are copied to new project
• Adding Staff will not cause the Effort (~rmw) task to be created
• ETC will be missing as project allocations won't appear as task assignments (ETC)

 

This is standard behavior, regarding the difference between Fast and Power plans.  I haven't seen much documentation on these play types since the ABT days:

 

• Fast Plan
• Create project, with no tasks, no WBS
• Add Staff
• Clarity creates an "Effort" (~rmw) task (in some versions, the name of the project would be used instead of "Effort")
• Project Allocations are pushed to the Task as Assignments (ETC)
• Called "Fast" because this is as simple and fast as one can get, when setting up a project for time management
• Power Plan
• Create project, with tasks/WBS
• Add Staff
• "Effort" (~rmw) task is NOT created
• Allocations are not pushed to/based on the Effort task
• ETCs do not begin to show until one starts to assign roles/resource to tasks
• Called "Power" both, I assume, because it takes more power to setup such a project up, and because such a plan delivers a lot more power

 

In New UX, because one must use a template to create a project, to replicate the Fast Plan capability, one needs to have a template with no tasks/no WBS, no roles, not staff.  Create the new project in the New UX with this empty template, than start adding staff/roles and the "Effort" Task will be created, just like in Classic view.

 

Q:  I did it wrong – can I convert my project from one type to the other?

A:  Yes:

• Convert Fast to Power:  Delete the "~" from "~rwm" task ID
• Convert Power to Fast:  Add task and give it the "~rwm" task ID.

Ok, this is in fact what it is, we are creating project from templates.  My question is, can we add ETC's to people in the new UI or does this need to be done in the Classic UI?

You would have to do it in the Classic UI. 
Before 15.6.1 there are no assignments in the New UI. In 15.61. the ETC is at task level for teams.

Allocation and ETC are two different things. Most users get the two mixed up or at least think they work together. 
Allocation is the percentage of a resource's "availability".
ETC is the amount of effort a resource is assigned to work on task(s) and also the time frame of the task. For example the Resource Manager has told you Mike is available 50% in August. If Mike is available 160 hours for the month of August your allocation of 50% would be 80 hours.You could assign Mike to work on tasks up to 80 hours for the month of August.
The other important word is "available" Mike may be assigned to other work/projects which changes the hours available.
Why does your system change the end date?
Check your team's end date. If the Team's last day of allocation is July 5 then you can't have a task past July 5 because you have no one allocated to work on your project after July 5.
