How could we define the Notifications

Under Home --> Organizer --> Notifications, how to define this Notifications in simple language. ( added the screenshot here).

I see that documentation always talks in technical way( mostly configuration and all).

Being technical is easy, but explaining the components in functional is little hard.

Please help me.

Under notifications you have messages created by the system for various predefined occurrences
Eg. when an action item is assigned to you, when you are added to the staff of a project
