  • 1.  How do you manage & monitor VLANS?

    Posted Feb 05, 2018 04:19 PM

I have a requirement to manage VLANS and watch for changes in traffic patterns.  What is the best method to accomplish this?  We currently use CA Spectrum and CA Performance Manager and I would like to be able to report on the changes in traffic volume seen on the VLANS.  I see all the VLANS in Spectrum and PM, but there is no volume because these are not considered interfaces.  I could create groups in PC, then add the interfaces in the VLAN as well as the port-channels, but this seems like a lot of effort, and we have hundreds, if not thousands of VLANS, so impractical as well.

    Hello World,

Any real life tips that could be shared with John to help ease his dilemma?

    John,

When you reference there being no volume, is it in both Spectrum and CAPC Dashboards that you don't see data?

Any chance that rules set up in the Groups, to populate them with the appropriate interfaces for use in reporting or Event configuration, would work as a solution?

    Thanks!

    Mike

    HI Michael,

That is correct, there is no VLAN data in Spectrum or Performance Center for the VLANS.  The issue with the grouping is that I would have to create a special group for every VLAN, and that is far too time consuming.  I am looking for something a little more, automatic.

    John,

Is a larger part of the problem the lack of data? Is that expected?

I wonder if these VLANs aren't discovered correctly to get polled as interfaces.

CAPM and Spectrum are capable of discovering VLAN interfaces and polling them for report data.

    Thanks,

    Mike

I think the issue here is perhaps just my lack of understanding exactly how VLAN traffic is monitored.  Can it be done from the interface, or would I need to create groups containing all the ports/channels to be able to report on the VLAN traffic?  So the question may be better asked, are Spectrum and PC/PM capable, with perhaps an area I am unfamiliar with, of reporting on VLAN traffic and issues that may arise around the interfaces that are part of that VLAN?

    John,

The VLANs should get discovered and polled like a regular interface. I do have them in a lab showing data and reportable like any other interface element in a CAPM system.

From my past time supporting Spectrum, I know it is fully capable of discovering VLAN interface models for polling and alarm generation.

If that isn't happening on either system I'd say a Support case would be a good next step to determine a cause.

Could be any number of issues from product configuration, product issues, or device configuration problems.

Some quick discovery debug and/or polling debug is likely reveal a culprit.

    Thanks,

    Mike
