ITCM r14 and Windows 2008 R2 Extended Support

  • 1.  ITCM r14 and Windows 2008 R2 Extended Support

Is it safe to assume that customers with Windows 2008 R2 Extended Support agreements will continue to receive the CA rollup data for such packages when we enter extended support date periods?

Do we have to do anything different to get the CA metadata notifications after April 2020 and accept them into our systems?

    Thanks in advance.
    Bob.

    Hi Bob,

Extended security updates are usually not available for free and are only for Microsoft Customers that are paying for extended support, so we avoid adding them into our content.

    Rgds,

    Steve.

OK so, no way to register our extended support and have specific registered service to get these via CA ITCM content?
If so then I guess that means we're back to WSUS or SCCM to achieve our goals.  That will go down like a lead balloon with our customer.

I'm bumping this as my customer has requested an official position from CA on Extended Support patching via IT Client Automation (ITCM).

If it is not possible to get typical extended support patch releases via the standard CA Intellirollup and meta data notifications, then could we somehow register Microsoft separately as a patch provider with a new channel for the extended support patching - in order to continue using ITCM and not have to switch or augment with SCCM/WSUS?

    Regards,
    Bob.

    Hi Bob,

The Patch Manager team has yet to perform the technical evaluation so we can not give an official position at this time.

But, from what I have read there will be nothing to stop you downloading the patches and adding them into Software Delivery.

I lifted the following information from a Microsoft document.

    37. How will Microsoft deliver Extended Security Updates? Windows Server 2008/R2 instance running on-premises: Customers will receive an add-on Multiple Activation Key (MAK) through the volume licensing portal. Customers can then deploy both the new MAK key and any pre-requisite servicing stack updates, then continue with their current update/servicing strategy to deploy Extended Security Updates through Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), or whatever patch management solution the customer prefers.

    Rgds,

    Steve.

    Thanks Steve.

So if I'm looking at doing this with ITCM r14, does this mean I can add a record for Microsoft Corporation as a new download vendor in my Patch Management console?  Potentially using a URL and user/password specifically tied to W2008R2 extended support and some MAK key/contract?

Have you seen other customers do this same thing with ITCM and Windows extended support?

    Kind regards,
    Bob.

Further to this request regarding Extended Support, my customer is also asking for both .Net and C++ redist patches to be available in ITCM or Patch Manager.  Is this standard content that is enabled by default or needs some additional configuration or vendor profile adding?

Thanks Steve- I will review the patch when available in the customer system.
Can you advise what this means in reality?
I.e. will CA be releasing Windows 2008 R2 extended support patches each month, alongside patches for in-support Windows OS?

    Bob,

Yes, as and when Microsoft publish any extended support patches we will publish a rollup for these.

In order to install these patches you need you need an extended support licence key installed on your target systems.

    Rgds,

    Steve.
