  • 1.  Setup transport functionality

    Posted Jul 13, 2020 10:57 AM
    Hello Expert,

We want to setup transport functionality ("Send to ) in our client to move object from one client to another client. We can do that using export/import method also but we want to configure "Send To" method also.

Appreciate, if anyone has configuration document/lead/guidance which could help to setup.

    We are using AWI 12.3

    Regards,

    Hello Peter,

Thanks for the URL , we did setup as per document and we can see "send to" option :)
Still object is not transporting to another client. For transporting an object do we need any API or any other configuration setup?

Could you please put some more light ?

    Regards,
    Viral

    Hi Viral,

you have to use the same programs from the utility folder as when you run the transport manually/interactively.

    https://docs.automic.com/documentation/webhelp/english/AA/12.3/DOCU/12.3/Automic%20Automation%20Guides/help.htm#AWA/Admin/admin_TransportCase_GeneralProcedure.htm

    A word of caution:

If you have multiple Automic users, I strongly recommend you do NOT configure a system where every Automic user can transport (via "send to" integration, automation or else) without an Administrator unless you absolutely trust each and every Automic user to not do anything unintended, ever!

Transport has no security. You can not restrict "transport permissions" to particular objects, and it overwrites any objects at the destination, and wipes their version history clean! There may also be bugs or other unintended things, e.g. we have seen whole clients (all objects) being overwritten by someone transporting a "client" object that some day appeared in Transport Case, and to this day nobody knows how.

Thus, transport has potential to wreck entire installations if not supervised by a human.

    Best regards.

    Hello Peter,

Thanks for pointing this approach for object movement however I would like to know more about "send to" functionality.

Basically we want to transport object using "send to " functionality. Could you please help/guide ?

    Thanks in advance.

    The term "send to" implies it can be configured to send things to anywhere that you like.  However the magic that happens behind the scenes has to be custom engineered.  Unfortunately, I have never heard of anyone accomplishing what you are asking for.  Besides, what you are suggesting would probably not resolve all of your software change use-cases. We transfer software changes based upon these use-cases;

    (1) If very minor changes were made, manually re-apply those changes.
    (2) If only a few objects are involved, manually export/import.
    (3) If more than a few objects are involved, manually run transportcase.

We use custom-built workflows to assist with #3, but it is still a manual execution process.
