To all who review this post, greetings!

We are in the process of implementing some type Windows Server hardware monitoring.  We would like to receive traps from the server snmp agent and then generate an alert to the Windows Admin team.

We can either send the trap straight to Spectrum or using the snmptd probe; have the trap sent to UIM and then we will forward to Spectrum (we currently have the spectrumgw probe running between UIM and Spectrum).

Has anyone tried to use the snmptd probe?  If so; what are the pros / cons for using the probe versus going directly to Spectrum.

We have the following UIM infrastructure in place:

    1 - Sql Server DB (Windows 2012)
    1 - Primary Hub  (Windows 2012)
    2 - Secondary Hubs (Windows 2012)
    1 - UMP Server  (Windows 2012)
    1 - cabi probe server  (Windows 2012)

Thanks in advance for all responses.

If it is a dell or hp server you can load the dom_traps for dell servers are the cim_traps for hp servers inside SNMPTD probe and just configure the probe to the alerts that you want.

Key note for both Server types you will need to setup the snmp trap either on windows / linux if it is using dell open manage or compaq insight manager . If your not use the ilo / drac to configure the snmp traps.

Or you can use ntevl to pick up the alerts if it writes it to event log on windows .

    Thanks,

Unless there is a specific need for UIM to have alarms for these traps it makes more sense to me to skip UIM and have them go direct to Spectrum.

    David,

Thanks for your input.  That is the suggestion one team member has made.  We would like to manipulate the alert trap into something more meaningful.  That is the reason we were thinking about sending the trap to UIM.  The snmp collector probe has the ability to create your own alert message by taking the elements of the original trap and using pieces of the info to create something simpler.

Do you know if that is possible with the snmptd probe?

    Louis,

Thanks for your response.  When you configure the traps  inside the snmptd probe; can you create your own alert message?  (i.e., manipulate the original trap message into something your desire - "UIM:  Hard drive 001 failed"?

looks like there is not much flexibility there for modifying the message:
    http://techdocs.broadcom.com/content/broadcom/techdocs/us/en/ca-enterprise-software/it-operations-management/ca-unified-infrastructure-management-probes/GA/alphabetical-probe-articles/snmptd-simple-network-management-protocol-trap-daemon-monitoring/snmptd-im-configuration.html

This is the only kb found on modifying snmptd alarm messages

may need to use nas ao to do it.

    David,

Thanks for providing this information.  This will help us determine which direction we should go.  To keep it simple; we will probably just go from the hardware snmp agent to Spectrum.

Again, I appreciate all the answers.
