When will the CABI VMware Host reports be fixed?

  • 1.  When will the CABI VMware Host reports be fixed?

    Posted Oct 03, 2019 10:15 AM
So one set of the Unified Reports that we have scheduled that go out to clients on a monthly basis are the VMware Hosts * reports. The ones we use are the VMware Hosts by CPU Usage, by Memory Usage, by VM Count.
    VM Host Memory Usage:

    VMCount:

These all work in Unified Reports.

In CABI still in 9.20 these are all broken:
    VMCount:

Same result above for the VM Host Memory and CPU Usage.

When will these be fixed? I'm trying this with the latest 9.20 and cabi 4.10. Is there a new vmware updated working fix for this somewhere?

    Thank you.

Have you applied the latest cabi dashboards?

if you deployed the 1.1.1 version of the dashboards you might want to stop the wasp probe on the cabi and rename the work folder as well
    and then test again.

cabi has uim_vmware_dashboards_pack version which does not include a Count report.
what you are showing doesn't even match the Unified Dashboards > Cloud and Virtualization > VMware Hosts dashboard which has a VMware Host VM Count
so fill in the details of this report, what is it really and how is it accessed or it is custom built

    Hi Dave, Gene,
What I am looking for is the working replacement "VMware Hosts by *" reports that are in the Unified Report that work.
These same reports are in the CABI library but don't work.

Yes deploying this "uim_cabi_vmware_dashboards 1.11", onto the CABI and UMP box  did populate the Unified Dashboards VMware summary page:

But the "VMware Hosts by *" reports in the CABI Library still don't work. These are the ones that we need to schedule in CABI and send out but there is no replacement for them in CABI. These are in the CABI Library and I need these to work but don't:

@David Michel those are List Views under Unified Dashboards > Cloud and Virtualization > VMware Hosts
You cannot schedule and email List Views.
Basically before upgrading to 9.20 and possibly losing Unified Reports, we need to make sure that the CABI replacement for the Unified Reports for VMware reports that we are currently sending out to clients, work.

    Unified Reports has:

CABI has them too but don't work:

Just FYI, these are the same reports presented under the Operator Console for > Reports > VMWare that don't work:

These all give the same error message:
    The report is empty.

OK, now I'm with you, but unfortunately don't have any live vmware data to test with.

Easy to see from the url this is a cabi report and since it is built in the back end config such as data source, etc. should all be automatically set.
    /cabijs/flow.html?_flowId=viewReportFlow&decorate=no&standAlone=true&ParentFolderUri=vmware_hosts_by_vm_count&reportUnit=%2Fpublic%2Fca%2Fuim%2Freports%2Flibrary%2Fvirtualization%2Fvmware%2Fvmware_hosts_by_vm_count

Maybe someone else out there has vmware and can test this.
However either way it will probably be necessary for you to open a case.

I quick way to check if I'm just missing the data for the report is if you have a way to open the report its trying to run and tell me what QoS its looking for.
IDK where these are stored and how to view them to see the actual queries its trying to run against the db.

checking the library xml provided no clue so went for the obvious based on the name vmware_hosts_by_vm_count and found this at the probe metrics page under the Host section.

VMCount Count This monitor indicates the number of virtual machines on this host.

Ok I definitely have that data from the probe. That metric is turned on and PRD has data.

Hello, I'm raising the sev on my case b/c we really want to upgrade on the 24th but need a working report.
But in the mean time just thinking of workarounds.

Could I install a 2nd UMP instance (UMP2) and point it to our current 8.51 UIM deployment and install Unified Reports on this UMP2 box. Would the 2nd UMP\UR instance see the same scheduled reports in the existing database?

Then when I upgrade to 9.20, if I don't upgrade this 2nd UMP box instance, or just upgrade it and leave it at 9.02, could I still run the existing UR off this box and have the working reports?

[Primary Hub ] [UMP] fully upgraded to 9.20

^[UMP2 with Unified Reports running and staying at 9.02 ]

    Would this possibly work ?

Also I need a clarification, when we upgrade from 8.51 to 9.02 that is when I install the 9.02 Unified Reports correct. Then do we loose Unified Reports portlet when I upgrade to 9.20 or will I have still have it if I installed UR 9.02? I'm not clear on that.

    Thanks.

So the response to my support case from UIM's development team was basically too bad.

Case# 20078322 No CABI VMWare reports are working in 9.20
The new CABI's VMware Hosts\Guests by * reports are all based on metrics that are now only found w/in VMware MCS templates and not from w/in the probe's metrics itself.

For every who uses the vmware probe still via the probe gui way w/in the IM tool, you won't be able to generate these reports any longer.

Since we are still using a supported method to implement the vmware probe and we are still collecting the same QoS metrics that previously populated the VMWare Host by reports, shouldn't UIM development then provided 2 types of reports. One based on the MCS metrics and one based on the probes GUI?

Or they should modify/update the report to pull both types of QoS metrics which we know it can CABI is capable of.

    HI @Daniel Blanco ,

Did you take a look at this thread and try exporting your UR report and importing them into CABI?

I have not tested it but it sounds like this might help.

Hi Gene, thanks. I'd give that a try but do you or does anyone have an 8.51 w/ UR still running anywhere, where they can export these "VMWare Host By CPU/Mem/Disk/VMCount" reports? If so can you attach it to this thread or email me directly?

Hi @Gene Howard, we are in the process to install a new 9.20 environment and  once ready we will switch all 15 client hubs and robots to the new environment.  We switched now a test hub with a robot that contains a vmware probe (an existing one, thus not configured by MCS)
Indeed, all dashboards, all reports are empty!!
I never saw an indication/warning of this problem, thus for us this is a bug that needs to be fixed. (like the reports and dashboards still exist somewhere)

@Luc Christians, I was not involved with Dan's case directly.

I believe  this did go to dev and they said this was expected and not a bug

Please feel free to open a case and request the dev team be engaged again on this issue.

unfortunately from the support  side I am not sure there is anything  we can do.

We installed a vmware probe 7.14 on a new robot and deployed all doc recommended mcs profiles.
This generates a lot of qos metrics and added some alarms
BUT: all reports are also EMPTY

Hello, just an update but the suggestion of exporting the old UR reports and them importing them doesn't work. Yes the import works but when you try to run the UR report in a 9.20 environment it complains of missing files, sections, etc.. I worked with Gene but it got to a point where I'd have to modify/edit the UR in Jasper Studio and at that point just said forget it. Its too complicated.

@Luc Christiaens so did you configure the vmware probe using the MCS and still those reports are empty. Nice... I see 0 checking was done here on the QA side with regards to report(s)

    After:
    - delete all mcs vmware profiles
    - stop vmware probe
    - delete vmware probe
    - nis_clean
    - remove all vmware devices & qos
    - restart data_engine, discovery_server and udm_manager
    - deploy vmware
    - customize vmware via AC with default UMP template
    wait 15-30 minutes
    and all reports were populated
