CA UIM 8.5.1: SQL Server 2016 Enterprise vs Standard Edition

​Hello,

We have CA UIM 8.5.1 (windows environment) and our sql server is SQL 2016 Server Enterprise Edition.

Due to the high costs of the licensing of the "Enterprise" Edition, management now wants to know if we
can go to the "Standard" Edition without any adverse effects to our environment.

Not sure if this can be done, or what the steps (backup, install, restore db).

Has anyone had to perform this task before?

you should check with MSand your DBA to see if that is supported.
If you have partitioning enabled you will have to remove the partitions as this is not supported by standard addition.

the application team does not test in QA on this type of migration.

From the application side, we would not know the difference.
Performance may be wors due to not having partitioning enabled if it currently is.

Also note that there were versions (not sure if they still exist for 2016 as MS has simplified licensing) where you had to consider end users into the licensing cost and that included people accessing a web portal that displayed data pulled from SQL server.

Hi Pat,

Here is my two cents as well...

• We do not recommend the use of Standard Edition.
• Enterprise edition is much more scaleable and provides superior performance, less restrictions, e.g., on use of memory/processors.
• Enterprise doesn't require as much administration/maintenance, its much less in terms of the 'care and feeding' of the UIM database for your DBA.
• Table partitioning provides a great advantage over Standard Edition and directly affects performance especially in a medium to large environment with larger tables/TBs of data. Therefore, the data maintenance jobs and the index maintenance jobs, which are scheduled from the data_engine probe UI, will not be effective because of the unsupported version.
• Online index maintenance is NOT supported in the Standard Edition of Microsoft SQL Server.

• Standard edition can be outgrown fairly quickly...
