UIM 20.x tidbits

  • 1.  UIM 20.x tidbits

    New naming convention
20.1 = year & quarter, so first quarter of 2020

    Some of the new things:
    IBM i7.3
    SUSE 15.5
    Ubuntu 18.4 LTS
    RHEL8
    Debian 9
    Windows 2016 & 2019
MS SQL Server 2017 for UIM DB
    Oracle 19c  for UIM DB
Availability report (found in OC Operator Console)
improved hub LDAP functionality and performance
    new REST APIs for MCS
over all improved performance & reliability

    OS versions dropped
    AIX PowerPC 6.1, 6.2, 7.0
    HP-UX 11.2
    CentOS 5
    Debian 5, 6
    RHEL 5
    Ubuntu12 x86_32
    Windows 2008

    What's to come
20.3 (3rd quarter this year) end of Flash

Two directions in development (as understood by me)
UIM - Flash free, standalone product as is now
DX IM - Flash free, data source for DX OI

    Flash dependent
    USM
    Discovery Wizard
    Group Management
    MCS
    PRD Performance Report Designer
    Alarm management in UMP
    Dashboard Designer
    List Designer
    Unified Dashboards
    Unified Reporter
    SLA management
    Maintenance scheduling

Knowing that two quarters from now is almost non-existent you indicate two things:

UIM - Flash free, standalone product as is now

    and

    Flash dependent
    USM
    Discovery Wizard
    Group Management
    MCS
    PRD Performance Report Designer
    Alarm management in UMP
    Dashboard Designer
    List Designer
    Unified Dashboards
    Unified Reporter
    SLA management
    Maintenance scheduling

Is there any information on the plan to address each one of these? My past experience with the UIM product is that plans like this come along with the product just dropping the functionality. Why fix or port it when it can just be dropped from the product is the argument I have seen.

Case in point, IM - there's still no replacement for that and it has been 8 years now.

Or the five or so attempts to replace the package archive over the past decade. Nothing there has come functionally close to the original package archive though I wish it would because the package archive is just backwards.

    That's for pointing that out.

'UIM - Flash free, standalone product as is now'
    is one half of:
Two directions in development (as understood by me)
UIM - Flash free, standalone product as is now
DX IM - Flash free, data source for DX OI

As in two design directions, 'as is now' meaning the use of the product is basically as it is now from a design perspective. Both will be flash free.

'Flash dependent' is a totally separate item just listing what is currently flash dependent.

Hopefully that addresses what you point out.

    Not sure it does.

To phrase differently, will the portlet "Dashboard Designer" exist in 20.3 as an HTML5 implementation or will it be dropped from the product in order to make UIM "flash free"?

Don't know if there will be a Dashboard Designer replacement or if it will just go to CABI.
Really don't know, there hasn't been any info on it at all to come my way.
Don't say it, know what you are thinking, CABI doesn't have nearly all the versatility.

It's not only the Dashboard Designer, but also:
    - list view/design
    - prd view/design
    - sla/slm
    - ..
In the 20.1 webcast there was no real information how this will be replaced in a "at least as good" way. (except some vague reference to an extra product AIOps, but I'm trying to find some installation/administration guide of this new/extra product)

And just to share a terrified UIM owner's worry, if you have a web presence built on any of the current UIM versions - including 20.1 - it will use UMP and the associated portlets.

Now consider what's going to happen if the list viewer and performance reporter "go away"? How about the dashboard designer?

What if you are a MSP and provide that UI to thousands of customers?

What if you have to now rewrite your entire UI to use CABI or some other likely inadequate replacement?

    How about training and documentation?

Hardware deployment (because CABI runs on a second set of servers)?

And all at the whim of product release schedules because if your security group is even half respectable they're not going to let you continue to run unsupported software in a production and public facing fashion.

And what happens when 20.4 comes out or 21.1 and now you have to be on a flash free version because security policies have compelled you to use a product version that no longer fulfills the current product function.

Time to dust off the RFP used to purchase Nimsoft and start sending that around I think.

I understand and concur with Garin's comments. Removing components that have been in the product for years without providing a replacement that is "as good as" or better along with a method to migrate from one to the other is not the way to retain customers. I could hark back to the old days of the Enterprise Console which used ActiveX widgets to build dashboards. It remained a viable component until SDP (the UMP predecessor) had the widgets and capabilities that were on par with the Enterprise Console. I learned a long time ago that it is more cost effective to retain current customers than have to find and acquire new customers to replace them.

Hi  @Luc Christiaens wait what webcast?

Also are these depreciated in 20.1 or a future release?
It's not only the Dashboard Designer, but also:
    - list view/design
    - prd view/design
    - sla/slm

they are all there in 20.1, and are not supposed to be in 20.3 which is flash free.

The Dashboard Designer portlet went away in version 7 if I recall correctly. The Dashboard portlet is already HTML5.
