What’s New In CA Mobile App Analytics 15.1

By Anon Anon posted Mar 31, 2015 08:34 PM

We are excited to announce a feature rich release, version 15.1 of the CA Mobile App Analytics (CA MAA).  This release is driven by an amount of feedback we received from you, our valued customers!

Since it’s a fairly new product, here’s a quick overview of CA MAA..

CA Mobile App Analytics brings visibility into your mobile app health by providing Ops, Dev, and App Owners with performance, crash, and usage metrics. Additionally, CA MAA and APM integration enables end-to-end visibility into business transactions.

Here’s what’s new in CA MAA 15.1:

  • Enhanced Security
  • Improved Diagnostics
  • Geo-Spatial Heatmaps
  • Session Playback (session video)
  • SDK, Analytics, and Usability Enhancements

Enhanced Security

CA MAA already secures data encryption between SDK (mobile device) and MAA server through SSL layer, we call this encryption of data-in-flight. With this release we have added encryption of data-at-rest; whether it’s cached on device or configuration data, it’s encrypted. This prevents man in the middle attack, they can’t snoop into the data or rogue client can’t inject any arbitrary data into the systems since everything is encrypted.

In effect CA MAA supports “end-to-end encryption of all of the data” interactions: data-at-rest and data in-flight. This capability is UNIQUE to CA MAA, one that’s critical to industry verticals such as Banking, Retail, Financial, Insurance, and Healthcare with higher degree of security requirements around data. This enhanced security capability is available via on-premise deployment through CA MAA SDK.

As a reminder, CA MAA is already FIPS compliant (as of version 14.4).

Improved Diagnostics

In-app feedback is a good DevOps best practice, helps Developers know what happened and why the event crashed, get feedback from the users. If there’s a crash then Developers can throw up a form in-app to collect feedback from the customer, which is then relayed from SDK to the MAA analytics dashboard.

Among other improved diagnostics, Developer can now do a better root-cause analysis with:

  • Battery level info which key for stability of the app
  • Capture the fact that device is jail broken
  • Detect a touch event that spiked the CPU, which is pretty useful for the Developer
  • Device moved to a dead zone potentially caused the transaction failure, which informs the developer that the app can be more resilient if the network is weak

Geo-Spatial Heatmaps

Geo heatmaps provide more answers from the data: performance, problems, usage so you can zoom in to get a city-level view of activities. Visual representation of raw data make it actionable and takes guesswork out of the analysis.

For example if you’re a retailer with your tablet apps at stores servicing customers, you can see which stores across the country are performing well or not performing well.

If you’re a business owner, you can run a campaign in that region. Or a network issue in a particular region can be visualized, if you’re an Ops person.

Session Playback (session video)

Visualize exactly what transpired on the app end-user, what the user viewed in their app and the specific actions they took on each screen. This is essentially is a simulated video playback of specific events, with the ability to step through events all the way leading up to the crash.

This enables Developers to troubleshoot better, Operations teams to clearly isolate network dependencies in failures, and app owners to optimize the app layout.

SDK, Analytics, and Usability Enhancements

Additional enhancements that make up CA MAA 15.1 are:

  • Supports comparison with time dimension. You can compare data from last month to this month, essentially historical baseline comparison
  • URL endpoint trends key because customers take web app into mobile app, so essentially key to understand URL endpoint analysis becomes key
  • Deep search and pagination. When you search for a specific crash, we load up data from the backend as well including: crash type, session detail, sessions
  • Readable crash stack trace. For crashes we used to have stack trace with volume of details. Now we roll up the information so you can quickly do thread level versus navigating volume of data
  • App Profile Management. We now have ability to manage app profile using profile management: choose which data to collect among: crash, performance, usage. See illustration below
